of course we've all heard that being asian can work against you during the college app process. what would it mean for me as a first generation vietnamese female applying for the fall 2009 school year? thanks, i just want to be clear on this.

Hmm. I don't think that Vietnamese are overrepresented at top schools (I think more Chinese, Japanese, and Korean comparatively are overrepresented, but Vietnamese could still be overrepresented. Not so sure about that though).

Either way, being first generation is really a big deal and even if you are Asian, being first generation is more important (especially because it usually means that you come from lower incomes, so you're more likely to qualify for grants and whatnot). If you're applying to the UC's (you are from Cali, so I'm assuming such), then race isn't a factor anyway. Being first generation, however, can be factor.

yeah if only i could suddenly switch races for the college admissions process lol. yeah im looking at ucs for safeties and berkeley/LA as well as USC for likelies but i am also looking at ivy league. how does 1st gen play into the ivy league?

The Ivies probably treat first generation applicants the same as every other private school in the nation do. If you're first generation and you are socioeconomically disadvantaged, then they might forgive things like lower test scores.
