Hello, I am a rising high school senior and I'm finally getting serious about what the next 4-6 years of my life will be like. I'm half-Mexican (other half is Polish if anyone's curious) and I've been hearing that I would be able to get a grant/some form of aid simply because of my Hispanic background. Also, my mother is on disability and I've been hearing from classmates and friends that I'd also get some financial help because of that. If anyone can just clarify if this is all true because it seems like a too good to be true kind of situation to me. If it is true I'd like some information too. Thanks.

There are no grants or scholarships available simply for being hispanic. There are scholarships for low income hispanics.

What was your PSAT score…and have you taken the SAT also. National Hispanic Honor is for high achieving Hispanic students. Awards vary.

As a Hispanic student, you might find some colleges that do have specific awards.

You will have to do your ‘homework’.

At least one college has specific scholarships for targeted underrepresented minorities.

Read more about the Chancellor’s Scholarship Program at UW-Madison (note that there is NO requirement to be low income or to be a Wisconsin resident):

As soon as someone tell you that, whip out a pen and write down the specifics. It is a long hard hunt for outside scholarships so if someone knows of any specifically, take advantage.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. I’m sorry for not including this info. but I got a 29 on my ACT (going to take it again), in the top 10% of my class, and I have a 3.94 weighted GPA at the moment. I bombed the PSAT so there’s no hope there (haha). I guess I’ll just check with all of the universities I’m looking into. However, does anyone have any information about grants for kids with disabled parents? Thanks.

Check out this list, I noticed a few that you qualify for based on gpa/act.

Son received the National Hispanic Recognition Award (Son missed 2 questions on SAT and won a national merit corporate award). He didn’t receive squat for NHRP. We were later told here, on CC, that you have to be poor and broke to get something. The thing is, no school that he applied to really cared about that, so it didn’t really do us any good. Many schools do not use affirmative action to place students, so I wouldn’t rely on being hispanic to get anything.

No I have not heard of scholarships for students of disabled parents (although there is always some scholarship for everything under the sun it is not usually large compared to the big ones and the ones colleges give.) I googled and found one for $1,000 and there were 700 people applied and 15 awarded. That is why you have to get specific informations from all these people you know who have all this knowledge of such scholarships. Because they are hard to find you need to jump on it when you hear of one.
