minority recruitment weekend

hey guys...ive just been invited to the minority recruitment weekend thing march 31st...anybody know anything about this and likelyhood of being accepted if you were an invitee?

Think about it: Why would colleges squander their $ and goodwill by inviting students to special weekends who have no chance of being accepted? That's why students who are invited to weekends like yours will be accepted unless they do something major to cause the college to reject them. "Something major" would mean being caught stealing from the bookstore or something similar.

Two questions for you:
1) Did your letter mention anything about you being considered for any scholarships?
2) Where do you live?

And I would take that invitation as a VERY good sign. Good Luck with everything.

no, it says nothing about scholarships...and i live in MD...how about you, were you invited as well?

Northstarmom- you seem like you know a lil' about this, so i was wondering if I wasn't invited to this minority recruitment thing and i am a minority, does it mean i will be rejected?

i want to know the same thing as holla at me. and i know obviously no one can know the answer for sure but seriously that suuucks. i want to be invited.

I WAs INVITED!

Do u have to send the reply by fax!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

You do have to send it by fax. I hate fax!!!

Are international students minority students too? How did the letter come? post or fed ex?

It came by post. This program is for African Americans and Latinos only, though.

are any of you who are going to the weekend brining your parents along? i have never visited Duke and niether have my parents...but it would be a major inconviece for them to come (work/younger siblings)

I dont think parents can come. You are supposed to come and live with a current undergraduate and all the activities are for students only so im not really sure if your parents can do much there especially since you will be so busy.

a few clarifications:

-my year, most of the people that i know were invited to the latino weekend were ultimately accepted. this is the first year they're combining the two minority recruitment events. these invitations are essentially likely letters. however, not receiving one doesn't mean that you're definitely going to get rejected.
-this weekend (being as how it is multiple nights) is designed for the prospective student, not the family. however, parents are invited to the accepted students days (blue devil days-- they're one day long + an optional night stay).

bluestar, i dont want to worry about this any longer. I GOT A LETTER AND I PROMISE NOT TO ROB ANYONE, WILL I DEFINITELY GET IN? Like, should I put it out of my mind?

I would eat ppl in order to go to Duke! LOL

jk...

well......

devil may cry: let me put it this way, i would be really, really surprised if you don't get an acceptance letter in a month. i mean, there are no definites until you officially know, but basically, if you come to weekend, you'll be on campus when you find out if you're in or not. maybe you'll be arriving at duke for the weekend a day or two after you find out. think of it this way: if you're not going to get accepted, why is duke going to invite you here in april? especially right around the time when you find out? they're not that evil as to make you spend money on airfare to then deny you as soon as you land.

good luck :)

(if anything, this letter serves as a 'please don't stress anymore!' sort of thing).

Question.
When will these letters stop being sent? If i did not get one as of now does that mean i will not get one? I am going to go into cardiac arrest, i swear.

The last day to send in the forms for the program is March 10 so I dont know how much longer they will send them since the deadline is fast approaching.

no, perhaps you are mistaken, stan. On the letter you fax it says no later than MArch 14. I just recenlty brought a round trip 2 way flight to Durham that stops in hot Atlanta! So, I am faxing the two letters today at school.

I am a latina in NY but I haven't received anything yet. I am applying to the engineering program.

to those with the invitation, what are your stats? Those are mine:

School Type: Public H.S.
Race/Gender: Hispanic Female
Prospective Major: Engineering
Unweighted GPA: 3.5
Weighted GPA: 4.0?
Class rank: school doesn't rank

SAT I Math: 760
SAT I Verbal: 650

SAT II Scores
SAT II Writing: 690
SAT II Math IIC: 740
SAT II Chemistry: 670
SAT II Physics: 660

Great EC

i mean, everyone's right.. the deadline is coming up really soon, so there's an extremely strong chance that there will be no more letters sent out. i mean, i don't know one way or the other, but that's what i would expect. i don't think that no letter = no acceptance though. i think there's still a chance of acceptance regardless of invitation status because committee is still in session.

aaand in case anyone is interested in perhaps reading between the lines... i was invited to host a student for the weekend. i probably sent the response form back too late, so i'm not sure if i will, but, the letter they attached to the response form says: "We hope that these activities will give the invited students a taste of life at Duke and will encourage many of them to enter the matriculating class of 2009." so there you go.
