Minority situation

Hello

I was recently accepted to Cal Poly for fall 09 and am thrilled at my acceptance. I am seriously considering this college but need some more info. I know that this question may seem controversial or obscure, but here it goes. What is the situation for minorities at cal poly, specifically asians and indians? Is there a significant asian/indian student population? Are there asian/indian places to eat near campus?

One of my friends told me that this college is lacking in diversity.
I was wondering whether this is true or not.

Please advise.

Thanks!

San Luis Obispo is a small city of 45,000 people or so. There might a chinese restaurant(like panda express or something). I read that the asian population is around 12%. Its not as much as some of the UC's, but it's a decent %.

determined,
I have applied to San Luis Obispo and have visited there all my life (my father's relatives live in a nearby town). It is a small college town, but it is booming. It might not be cultured, but the college campus is diverse. I wouldn't doubt that an asian/indian restaurant hasn't been erected in the last year. It's the perfect place for studies though, nice and quiet.

Thank you to the above posters. I am starting to understand the situation.

Bump for additional input.

Is there an Indian community at Cal Poly?

I dunno, I'm Filipino and Native American. So hopefully I can add to the diversity.

There's a good amount of asians here. Not as much as most UCs though. The cultural clubs are quite involved and yes there is an indian student association. There is also an indian restaurant close to my apartment.

how are the Asian girls there ? good looking ?...

There's definitely a lack of diversity there. People can be rather ignorant about other culture, but they are also very open-minded to different cultures. You will probably feel some unease Freshman year. You will rolled your eyes several times. But, you will get use to it and laugh it off. Most Asians are in technology majors (architecture, arce, etc), some in business.
The restaurant there... it's... um... don't expect much (Slightly horrify that someone called Panda Express an Asian restaurant) Don't eat the Asian food on campus, you will traumatized yourself :P (Ok, that was a joke... kind of) The Asian food there are way too expensive for its quality - it's better if you cook it yourself.
I don't much know about clubs, since I wasn't interested. I think the most active one is Chinese Christan Fellowship, which takes in all Asians. Most of my friends have attended their events at least once. There are some Asian sorority/fraternity based on majors, but not every majors have them.
Anyway, welcome to Cal Poly!

If I got into Cal Poly and attended, I don't think the minority would affect me much. I believe that the asian population is like 14%? My city is 7% and my school is 9% asian, so I don't think it really matters.

Well... she did ask :D Just answering, but I think it's a good question.
Some people don't really care, but some do, depending on their background. I am born in Hong Kong, and raised in San Francisco, so I guess I am spoil.
We had great diversity, and much better Asian food there. Not as good as eating at the food's native location, but at least better than most.
I am staying solely for the architecture program, because I am not really that happy in SLO outside of my studio.
To some people, it can matter. To some, they have great flexibility and are fine anywhere ^-^ Good for you!

I heard UC Irvine is an Asian Haven. So is UC Davis.

^Almost all UCs are "Asian heaven". They make up at least 40% of all students that are enrolled there.
