Minority status

Does a multiracial (hispanic/caucasian for example) interest boarding schools as much as being hispanic would? Would it also give you an edge in the application process?

Creative, I would think that a multiracial hook may carry some preferance. I would especially think so if the "Hispanic" part if Mexican - American. If it's say Argentinean, then probably not.

I think it counts because they always list in those viewbooks and pamphlets a statistic that shows how many people of colour/multicultural(I actually forget what word they use)are in the school and I know for sure they count biracial in there. Anyway, I think it will help you because they don't want to say like 99% of our students are white.

i feel bad when people get like one reply so i thought i'd bump it to help.

Oh my god..

why r u sooo mean to me???

You think everyone is mean to you. Get over it.

BTW - Why did you get offended when prepparent said SGS was an episcopal school? I don't get it..

I wasn't mad! No I really wasn't... it just sounded like he hated me.... with his "Good luck with your search" he sounded like he never wanted to talk to me again:( :(

I'm a very sensative person.

oh my god.. are you serious?

What are you going to do if you get rejected from boarding schools?

comit suicide! no i'm kidding, but i'll probably cry for days... this is pretty much the rest of my future on the line here.

I'll join the circus. I'll be pretty good. :D

haha r u making fun of my senativness?<------is that a word?

I'm going to stop this conversation. It's pointless.

Frenchvanilla, when I said Good Luck, I meant it from my heart. It is quite common for me to say good luck to many people on this thread.

okay, sorry I'm probably too overemotional. Sorry.

Hey - you've hijacked my thread! :)

Any other opinions on the original topic?

Starting again …

“Does a multiracial (hispanic/caucasian for example) interest boarding schools as much as being hispanic would? Would it also give you an edge in the application process?”

I think so.
Boarding schools benefit from having an ethnic/multiracial diverse population. It’s not necessarily Hispanics only; I’m also referring to African-Americans, Indian/native Americans, Hispanic-Americans, multi-racial etc.

Would it give you an edge? I think so too.

I don’t think the minority pool of students is as big. Having a number of spots available for minorities’ vs. the numbers of applications from minorities makes it easier to be accepted at a boarding school. It is my opinion.

It’s a fact that top boarding schools try to resemble a similar ratio of minorities in their schools as in the United States. That means that these schools would prefer to have around a 20% to 30% of its students to be minorities. As schools are lagging behind from that percent, applications from minorities are more strongly considered.

There are some groups in this country who feed minority students into boarding schools. Most of them from inner cities, talented young students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, with talents in academia, sports, music, arts, etc. are considered and even invited to attend their boarding schools. Boarding schools even have recruiting visits to Latin countries, African countries, Caribbean countries, inner-cities in the US; looking to attract the most talented/interested into their schools.

Yeah, I agree, people say you have a higher chance if you are a racial miniority. But,If a school has a rate of like 10% of students being minorities, does it mean that they care less about your race or are they more "Desperate" for minorities?

It just means that there are probably less minority applicants than white, middle to upper-class applicants.

I wouldn't say that (desperate or don't care). I am sure most of the boarding schools would like to have a minority representation. But some circum$tance$ might affect the number of minorities being selected at schools. What I mean by that is ... if the minorities attracted at boarding school are applying for FA ... some schools might not be able to cost that many students; thus reducing the pool.

I would say that minorities applying for boarding school who don't require FA have a much better opportunity of getting accepted than other groups.
