I will be attending Tisch School of the Arts next year as a Photography & Imaging major in the class of 2010. However, I am a huge theatre aficionado (I'm just an all-around art freak) and have a lot of theatre experience (acting classes, voice lessons, ballroom dance training, stage crew for two productions, stage manager for a theatre company for four straight productions). I'm interested in seeing what kind of opportunities I have getting involved in theatre at Tisch (or at NYU/NYC in general). I'm particularly interested in performance, directing, and stage management.

I know there is an Applied Theatre minor, which I'm definitely interested in. However, are there any other theatre-related minors at Tisch (or maybe in another school at NYU)? Only CAS has a full list up of minors available (drama is not among them). Meanwhile, the Tisch website offers the very vague "minors are offered in nearly every department at Tisch! (we just won't tell you exactly which minors and which departments are the exceptions)."

Does anyone know anything about Tisch minors AND/OR what my opportunities are to be involved in drama as a non-drama major (I'm interested in both taking classes--either towards a minor or as electives--and working on main stage productions, if at all possible)?

Hmm I'd be interested in seeing where on the site it says "minors are offered in nearly every department at Tisch." When I went to the Saturday at the Square thing, people were asking questions about double majoring/minoring, and were told that the only minor available at Tisch is a production minor (in the film/tv area).

Now, you might be able to take some classes. There are open arts classes at Tisch that ANYONE at the school can take (although I have no idea what these are, couldn't find a list on the website). And if there are classes at Tisch that aren't in the open arts curriculum, preference, of course, goes to the people whose major requires those courses, and then to other Tisch students, and finally to students from other NYU schools. So I don't know how likely the chances are for those, but at least you wouldn't be in the last category.

Well, that's all I can offer right now! I'd be interested to see if other people know anything, because I'd like to take classes in those areas too =)

There's no minor in Drama at Tisch. Non-majors are not able to take any classes which Drama majors take. The only Drama Dept. offerings are those in the Open Arts curriculum which are available to any non-Drama major at NYU. Non-drama majors are also not eligible to audition for any Tisch productions. Non-majors can participate in the extra-curric theatre groups at NYU, but that's it. Scrapnel, the info you give in your second paragraph about preferences does not apply to drama classes. Only majors are allowed to take drama classes, other than the Open Arts classes.

itsallverbage, no, the Minor in Applied Theatre is still there but it's not what you're looking for. Read the description of the program and you'll see that it isn't really a program for students who are just interested in minoring in theatre. It's an applied program, and is basically for drama students who want to have the benefit of those uses of theatre. Like I said, extracurricular theatre groups are going to be what you want to look at.

Yes, I know. I've read it a while ago--somewhat disappointed because it was NOT what I was looking for, but also somewhat intrigued. I am actually a bit interested about that minor still (I've e-mailed the department for further information).

The fact that I am also looking for a more conventional theatre training program is beside the point in my bringing Applied Theatre up. I just wanted to tell you that there IS in fact a minor offered by the drama department at Tisch.

Thanks for the info, anyway. Are you an NYU student? Which extra curricular group do you recommend I look into? There seem to be quite a few.

In terms of conventional theatre training, you cannot Minor in Drama at Tisch because of the intense studio training. We are all broken up into studios where we go 3 days a week, for the whole day. There is no in between. However, there are Open Arts classes- I think there may be an Acting class where you do monologues, etc (??)...also, look at some classes in Steinhardt. There may be some more like you are looking for. However, this will not account for a Drama minor, as there is no such thing.

NYUbound2009, my daughter was just accepted to Adler for Fall 2006. She is really excited and is looking for someone to ask a bunch of questions to about the experience. Could she get in touch with you, and how?
