Minors to go with Communications Major?

Hi All,

I'm planning on majoring in Communications, and am looking for good minors to pursue along with the major.

One of the majors I'm interested in pursuing is Library Media/Science, but although I'm very interested, I'm not sure if it's a good minor to pursue.

I've also thought about a Business Admin or Accounting minor. I realize a minor would not hold the prestige that a major would, but would it be a beneficial minor to the Communications Major?

I'm not really sure what I want to do after graduation. I'd really like to be able to pursue lots of possible jobs, however, I'm leaning towards office work of some type.

Any suggestions and advice are appreciated! Thanks!

Does the communication major offer subconcentrations, or is it a general program?

A minor does not need to be related to your major. Generally, business is a good minor as it might improve your employment prospects as well as enhance the comm major if you want to work in a private or nonprofit organization.

Library science? Not so good, IMO. Most jobs in library science are at the master’s level. A minor in the field doesn’t do much to enhance the comm major or employment prospects.

Other possible minors that might be useful with a comm major, depending on your particular interests and what you might plan to do with your degree: digital media; technical writing/editing; Spanish; human resources/training; marketing/public relations/advertising; IT/computer science; public admin. A lot depends on just what minors are available at your school.

If you’re leaning towards office work many schools offer some kind of certificate for that that you could get along with your major.

@Zapfino: Since I will be a transfer student (finishing AA this year at CC), and have not yet chosen a school for next fall, my options are open (I’m asking questions so that I can make a decision soon). A few schools I’ve looked at offer concentrations, but the availability of minors to choose from are rather poor. Others offer just communications in general but have a wider array of minors. One school offers a support track, which I believe is like a concentration since it counts for 1/3 of the credits of the major. Is a concentration a better choice than pursuing a general communications major?

That’s good to know about the business and accounting majors, since yes, I’ve been leaning towards office work like that or in HR, PR, etc. Basically, I’m hoping to come out fairly well rounded because I’d like to keep my options open since I’m not 100% sure what I’d look to do in the future.

That’s good to know, thank you! The list is much appreciated :)

@October 47: Interesting, I’ll have to look into that. Thanks :)

^ To answer your question, a subconcentration track in communication is not necessarily better. I suppose it’s a matter of breadth vs. depth in the major. I was just asking in case any subconcentrations you were thinking about suggested any relevant minors.

Oh, okay.
The program that is offered at the school I’m looking into going to (I’ve been looking at a few schools and programs, but I’m leaning towards this one) is Organizational Communication with a support track in Mass Communication (although the support track can be changed or you can have two if desired). The minors are then marking, or management…I’m leaning more towards marketing. It seems it would be useful along with the Comm major, is still business related, and is one of them that happens to be on the list you mentioned.

Thanks for your help on this! I’m eldest in my family and so I’m the first to get to figure this all out with majors, minors and transferring. I really appreciate the advice :)

Thank you!!
