Minors?

I was just wondering, if you're interested in getting a minor once you transfer to any of the UCs, do you have to take any prereqs for it at community college or do you take all the classes you need to fulfill the minor once you're in [insert here] UC?

Thanks :)

You can take depending on the minor 2 lower division classes to count towards a minor and then I think 5 upper division courses at the UC. You don’t have to take any classes before it’s just easier to take the lower division stuff at a cc, I was planning on minoring in history so I took History 101 & 102 at my cc. Don’t know if I’m going to minor in anything now.

Not to thread jack, but on the subject of minors…

What is the point of a minor? I’ve always wondered. If I’m going to minor, shouldn’t I just attempt to double major?

Minors supplement your degree. Many people don’t have the time or money to pursue a double-major.

I’m minor in accounting so I can get a CPA and I know there are many people on here doing the same.

I agree with grey’s comment. Double-majors can be very time consuming and many people can’t afford to do an extra quarter/semester/year. Also, minoring in something can be a good way to dabble in a subject that you may want to pursue in grad school (business or psych for example). The thing that sucks about the UC schools is that some of them coughCAL&UCLAcough don’t offer many minor options. I wish Cal offered a business minor.

Got it. Thanks guys. I’ve just heard so many mixed opinions on getting a minor.

What college do you go to?

If I get into UCLA I’m doing the Film or Global Studies minor. It would be way too time consuming to double major.

I want to double major in English and Communications at UCLA. I agree that it sucks that more of the competitive majors are not available as a minor at CAL & UCLA-such as communications…

Doing a double major in 2 years is pretty ridiculous considering you can’t overlap your classes.

Minoring is strong if you want the potential employer to know you are well versed in all areas of business.

Example- Econ Major with an accounting/management minor or English with a communication minor etc there are minor that complement the majors very well. Theres also Math major with a minor in Econ which is strong, but most UC’s have a Quant Econ major now.
