...that if your SAT score isn't at/above a certain mark that your application is automatically rejected? I was going to be applying ED due to the increased acceptance rate, but a shocking and devesating low SAT score which has put a stop to my plans. All of my ED stuff is ready to be mailed, but I might wait until the December SAT and throw myslef in the RD pool...

My ECS are pretty good, recs very good, and essay are great. Any chance admissions would "look at the whole person" regardless of the SAT results?

Of course the process is holistic! How bad were your SATs? There isn’t a cutoff they publish, but if you’re talking below 1900 for a non-URM, you’re in trouble.

That’s EXACTLY what I’m talking about! In fact, twenty points below. I supposed the “safer” bet would be applying RD and hoping for a significant improvement in December.

It is definitely not true that you can get automatically rejected from Penn (and most other schools) if your SAT scores are “too low”.

An 1880 on the SATs will not kill your application, although it won’t help either. All the admissions counselors I have met from Penn (about 4) attempt to downplay the importance of SAT scores, saying that other aspects like your transcript and essays are more important.

The choice is up to you whether you want to take them again and apply RD, but if all other parts of your application are strong, and Penn is your first choice, I would recommend that you apply Early Decision.

Nanquanmikey, I wish I had seen your post earlier. I opted to retake the SAT in December and apply for RD. Penn is my first choice, and now I feel like I made the wrong decision :.

hmmm what if u still sent it in ED? and then wrote that ur taking it one more time in november? can u still test in nov? like maybe as standby or something? i heard that since nov 1 is on a sunday this year, most schools are accepting a nov 2 postmark so u should be fine still if u really want

yep you can definitely test in november and send it to early schools! i think you should really try to get those scores up, though, unless you’ve got a hook working in your favor over at Penn…

I’m taking the SAT IIs in November. The SAT again in December. December is too late for ED (as far as I know).
Plus, I’m off school next week and all of the vital paperwork is with my counselor.

Don’t be discouraged. Try again in November. Just get an idea of how the college board phrases the questions and how to eliminate wrong answers. It makes the test so much easier. My friend was in the same situation. She took the SAT two times before and had scored far below her ability both ties. She was really worried because she is applying early somewhere and she wanted to have a good score. She took it a third time in October, and now she has 700 in Math and Critical Reading. So don’t feel bad, just try again. Your score does not define you. Good luck!
