We are having a hard time figuring out how to get a microwave fridge combo that is allowed in the Tulane dorms. We have figured out that is the only allowed way to have a microwave.

I am assuming that Tulane rents them out but how do we find a rental agreement so we can go ahead and fill that out? Or is it better to take a fridge and not have a microwave?

I believe all dorms have several common areas and/or kitchens that have microwaves. Looking at the Wall floor plan it appears there is one or two kitchen/"warming area"s on each floor as well as several lounges. The kitchen/warming areas would have microwaves I would think, and maybe the lounges although I rather doubt the latter do. Current students ought to be able to tell us something definitive though. You can see the Wall floor plan by typing in those 3 words into the search function at tulane.edu

Hi, for students who have reneted the microfridges in the past - do they work well or do they have a lot of problems? My D heard through the grapevine that they are alwyas beraking but she would really like the concenience of having one in her room.

IMO the price is too high. But, there is a convenience factor (they bring it/pick it up) and you don’t have to use the community microwaves, which can get kinda gross.

I got a microfridge too because I thought Tulane made it sound like the only option, which was wrong. If you’re going to be in Wall honestly the microwaves are always clean, and there are two per floor. Miss Wanda and the cleaning staff make sure everything is clean and Wall residents are really respectful in keeping common areas clean. That being said, if you don’t wanna leave your room, get it. If you don’t mind, just get a Target fridge and store it between years, cheaper.

Just to be clear, it is the only option if you want a microwave in the room. A fridge, as you say, can be purchased at Target, WalMart, whatever/wherever.

Yeah, that’s the confusing part! Tulane makes it sound like having a fridge combo they offer is the only option period. But in fact it’s your only option for having a COMBO. I would’ve been perfectly content with just a fridge had I known.

I had a microfridge last year and the microwave was absolutely awful. Only half of it would heat the food up so we would have to keep moving the food around inside and it still would never completely cook through. I ended up having to just use the microwave in the lounge. I decided next year I am just going to buy a fridge (which is way cheaper anyway) and use the microwave in my dorm.

FYI, you can buy a microfridge from the company instead of renting one. Tulane is cool with that. It’s just a hassle to store every year if you live far away.
