MIS major or Pre-Pharm?

Sophmore at UHouston. Have a low gpa below 2.00. Been lazy but determined to work hard to get it to a 3.00 or higher. Wondering if I should do pre-pharm or mis major?

It would help my motivation and confidence if I have a set goal.

any other info needed? just ask!

With a GPA below 3.0 med school might be out of reach. A business degree with a GPA in the mid 2’s could be just as problematic. Go with what you enjoy more.

GPA matters for both. Below 3.0 for pharm school will not cut it. However you could always go to the Caribbean for med school.

You could also get into researching for bio.

A below 3.0 GPA for business school will not cut it either.

How determined are you? What are your career goal? pre pharm and MIS is pretty different… I will say do something you like unless you know you won’t get a job out of it…

Not doubting your determination, change is the hardest thing to do…and to be honest, getting below 2.0, you have to be not attending class/not doing any assignments at all… but if you have really strong determination, you will do fine. I will try to get as perfect GPA as possible in your sophomore year, and transfer to a better school, so that you can have better exit opportunities in the future

It would be pretty hard transferring to a better school with that GPA. The only worthwhile transfer would be to University of Texas at Austin (and only if you decide on MIS). If the business school is any less than UT Austin, it won’t give you any better exit opportunities, especially compared to the probable additional cost/debt. You absolutely need to do your best to make perfect grades from here til graduation, regardless of what you do/choose. Internships relevant to your field during the summers will also be very important. Anyway, MIS vs pharmacy is a choice only you can make, as both are good careers (the only question is if pharmacy school will be a realistic option with your final GPA - I do not know anything about pharmacy school).

Whatever you do, don’t plan on getting a job with a Bachelor’s/Master’s in something non-quantitative, non-business, and non-technical, regardless of whatever GPA you reach.
