My son is a rising senior at a Catholic high school in Central Texas. He is very interested in computers and business and I think a MIS degree might be the best fit for him. He is a bit put off by Computer Science as he doesn’t see himself as an “engineer type” His grades are pretty good, cumulative GPA of 93.4 and he has Pre-AP and AP course work done in Computer Science and programming courses. His SAT just came in this morning as 650M/640V
I’m fairly certain he won’t get into UT-Austin and I don’t think he’s even interested in the school, oddly enough. The schools we’ve short-listed are:
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
UT-Dallas
Univ. of Houston
Univ. of Oklahoma
Univ. of Arkansas
For now, I am assuming that we can manage the tuition for the out-of-state schools and hopefully he will get some sort of assistance. More to come on that I’m sure but not for this thread.
Of those schools, I think that clearly A&M would be the front runner from an academic standpoint. I am talking both SPECIFIC TO THE MAJOR and also the overall university.
Staying with the theme of SPECIFIC TO THE MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS MAJOR. Does anyone have thoughts on the relative ranking of the programs? My general impression is A&M, UTD, OU, UH, Tech and Ark. This is off the top of my head after previous research on MIS undergrad rankings and other general research I’ve done.
We would be very interested in hearing of people’s experience and thoughts on these programs. Internships and job placement upon graduation will be very important. We can then weigh that in with the campus environment, overall school reputation, cost, distance etc to help inform our final priorities.
If you’ve managed to read this far, thank you. I think this is my first post to this site so apologies in advance if I broke any norms or failed to keep up with the stickies and posting protocol.
