miscellaneous questions regarding the commonapp please help

First of all on the topic of leaving the ethnicity box blank. My name is not South Asian sounding, or Caucasian sounding;in fact it is almost impossible to work out my ethnicity from my name. In addition, I don't have many other things in my application that point out I am Asian. If I leave it blank will admissions officers look down on it.

Secondly should I not make it clear where my interests lie on the first page, I plan to major in economics but since it is such a common major I think it may work against me. Again if I was to leave the section blank or put my interest as other will admissions officers consider me to be indecisive and unclear about my future. Could this somehow form a bad impression?

All feed back is kindly appreciated.

yeh umm bump

Anyone ???

On your first question, its hard to know what an individual admissions counselors will think about leaving the ethnicity section blank.

For what it is worth, I can tell you what my two sons, who if they were any more white would be translucent, are doing; they’re leaving it blank. Our last name is Scandinavian so it won’t be to hard to figure out.

Most of the info I’ve read considers Asians not to be URMs, so you likely have no advantage listing it. Also, another valid position to not list it is simply that it’s none of their business.

On your second question, again hard to read what any individual will think. If you’re dead set on Econ its probably not going to hurt to specify as such. On the other hand, leaving the section blank is not a problem as most ad counselors realize that many students will change their majors once they get to campus.

Thanks for the response :), the main doubt I have now is regarding the economics major. My supplementery essay to the university I am applying to makes my intended major quite clear -the essay pretty much asks me to talk about my major. If I leave it blank will the adcoms consider the unspecified major on the common app and the clear topic on my essay as some sort of discrepancy?

BUMP probably

Depending on the school, Economics can be considered pretty competitive to get into. Listing Econ is lot better than Psychology since pshych is the most listed one.

Will leaving my ethnicity blank frustrate or make the admissions officers think I am trying to evade identification as an Asian. My name sounds more Middle Eatern as in Israeli than Asian.
