Misdemeanor affected UVA early chances?

Hello CC,

I applied early action for UVA and was deferred in state with decent stats (4.2 GPA, 35 ACT superscore, good research and EC’s), and i wasn’t sure why. I might be overreacting and nitpicking, but i feel one reason was that i listed that i was charged with a misdemeanor. I caused a car accident, but i was not charged with a misdemeanor or felony. However, on the common app, where it asked if i was charged with a misdemeanor or felony, i said yes, and i listed that i was in a car accident. Could this be a reason that i was deferred? Whether or not this is the reason, could i resolve this issue by emailing the UVA Adcoms?

They won’t care

In other words, you misstated on the Common App that you had been charged with a misdemeanor? If so, I urge you to email ALL your colleges to explain briefly about your error. In the case of UVa, use that same email to say you are glad to be still under consideration, and that UVa is your top choice school. If there are any other new items you want to tell them (huge award, NMF, etc), put it in the emails to all the schools.

What was the misdemeanor? You usually aren’t criminally charged for a traffic accident. Something like, “following too closely” is not a criminal charge.

No, that’s not the problem.
UVa is fiercely competitive, holistic, and works hard on instate diversity. They don’t just take you because you have good stats, think your ECs are good. And it’s even unpredictable for instate legacies with top stats.

Why did you expect to be a shoo in?

On the Common App, when OP answered yes, adcoms would read the required explanation. They’re smart enough to see car accident and then the description.

They would have outright rejected, if they felt appalled.

The original post in this thread is unclear.

OP: Are you stating that you were charged with, but not convicted of, a misdemeanor traffic related offense ?

@Publisher yes, I was charged, but not convicted of a misdemeanor

The type of charge may have an impact on your chances of admission. Did you get deferred adjudication, or was the charge just outright dismissed ?

@Publisher the charge was dismissed, but I listed the incident under the question asking if convicted

Be sure to make that clear to Virginia.

I stand with my prior answer.
But are you saying you answered incorrectly? Not sure why.
The core question is:
“Have you ever been adjudicated guilty or convicted of a misdemeanor or felony?" You weren’t.

I don’t think any explanation is needed. They’re likely to know you were confused. Unless there’s additional info I’m missing, you don’t want to bring their attention to your confusion.

By answering yes, OP indicated that he had been convicted. OP, therefore, must notify Virginia admissions that he answered that question by mistake or incorrectly.

The Common App asks for details. Unless the dismissal just happened, since applying, the explanation should suffice to show he was not convicted. Kids do use the question to explain some issues they need not. It won’t be a firsf.

I do wish OP could clarify.

Plus the GC is asked a similar question, though he/she may not know of this since it’s outside school.
OP would not have been deferred, if this were a showstopper.

He can always clarify with the GC.

It feels like the OP is being cagey in the way he/she is answering questions, so I wonder what the charge was. Even though the OP apparently didn’t need to disclose since there was no conviction, he or she did disclose something. It would help to know what the charge was.

This is Virginia, and UVA admissions folks have to be familiar with the DMV laws in this state that make many driving violations misdemeanors, and sometimes felonies that would merely be a citation in other states. Teenagers have car accidents. As long as it wasn’t a DUI, you should be fine. You were not rejected, you were deferred.
-To OOS folks looking to attend UVA, take a good look at the driving rules here before you bring your car.
