Misrepresenting your major?

My undergrad business school doesn't specify students' majors on their diplomas. It only reveals that I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the business school. On job applications, can I put down business as my major instead of say, economics or marketing?

I'm tired of being pigeon-holed when applying to jobs. However, if asked point blank during an interview, I will obviously explain that I took core business classes in multiple areas, but decided to major in the specific field I was interested in at the time.

If they ask for your transcript, they’ll find out you lied. Which is a major career-limiting move.

Does a major really dictate that much when applying to jobs? It’s not like learning competitive strategy is really all that useful in a real job than say learning econometrics. Anyways, you could always put down “relevant courses:” and list the courses that you think they want to see.
