What has everyone heard about miss porter's rumours and things like that?

Haven't heard any rumors - except, of course, for the normal stuff about all girls schools which I have totally discounted. We are going for a revisit on April 6.
I was very impressed on our visit their last fall with our daughter. We sat in AP Calc class (BC) and were wowed!

didn't Jackie Kennedy go there?

Yeah, she went there.

where is this school ?

i admire jacqueline kennedy. miss porter's must have done an excellent job.

or...perhaps she's just an amazing person on her own.

<<insert dead-poet-esque="" quote="" about="" free="" thinking="">></insert>

that was a wild exaggeration on my part, i know.

If its the one i'm thinking of in Farmington,CT the mansion of rapper 50 cent is very close to it.

No rumors of Miss. Halls have come my way. I think they probably get the regular all-girls drama and cattiness. I got the school's brochure in the mail, but chose not to apply because I have heard some nasty things about all-girls schools. In reference to your question, it's really hard to learn about the dirt that happens at schools because they keep it on the down-low and give this sugar-coated, picture perfect image.

miss hall's and miss porter's are two different schools. please don't confuse them. Also it is in Farmington, CT and it is near 50's mansion.
Other famous alumni besides Jackie O. are...
Alice B. Hamilton
Lilly Pulitizer
Oprah's niece Chrisaunda Lee <-- nice person
and the person who wrote Erin Brochovich/ Ever After

We have had some cool speakers here too (including kristine lilly, ron suskind, and ann patchett).

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

We're going back to Porter's next week for revisit day. I am really looking forward to seeing the school again. Could you tell me if the campus empties out on weekends or do quite a few of the students stay on campus? I'm a bit concerned, with the number of day students and girls from in state, that there might not be much going on for the girls who live too far away to go home.

Shelley,
It's good to here your coming back for revisit day. I'll try to find you, and your daughter and introduce myself.. though it probably won't be until the end of the day.
Actually, a lot of people stay on campus on the weekends. We have things here called open and closed weekends... open weekends you can go home overnight... closed weekends you can't (or you can after your last commitment). There are usually traditions on closed weekends. If people are missing on the weekends... it is usually because they have gone to the mall, movies, or naples/starbucks. There are actually quite a few day students around on the weekends. The most common weekend activities are usually movies and sleeping over in other dorms. I know my friends and I personally love watching movies till very late at night on fri and sat. TV show season marathons are also quite popular.
Overall, the campus doesn't really empty out (except on long winter weekend, parents weekend and long fall. usually only 5-30 are on campus at these times).

hope you like the revist day! It should be fun.

Personally, you couldn't pay me enough to go to an all girls boarding school, but as far as they go, it's a pretty good one. Way less competitive to get into than good coed schools too.

i disagree with you suze. though you could say it is less competitive to get into... (yes porter's has a high acceptance rate that is dropping).... that is because people have the wrong image of single-sex schools. We actually are a competitive school, who have many students go to top schools and speak out in their 30 person classes. several alumnae who ar enow at big universities (including ivies) come back and say "you can tell who went to an all-girl's school because they are the only ones with enough guts to voice their opinions and contradict the professor intelligently in the presence of boys."
But for those who don't like the single-sex education idea... there are plenty of awesome co-ed schools.

I'm going to porters next year...along with 3 other girls from my grade. And possibly one of those " I pretend im so great at everything" girls whose story has changed from " I got wait listed" to " I got in, and im deciding" to " Oh, I was their top choice".

MPS along with a number of other all girl boarding schools may be a bit easier to get into then some of the co-ed schools, but this in no way means the school is inferior to the co-ed schools. I think it's a mistake to equate admissions numbers with quality education. I would venture to say that most/all all-girls school students would do just fine in the co-ed schools. I think it's a matter of choice. Looking at the stats of all-girl students compared to co-ed girls, you can make a case for the all girls school. Especially if your bag is math/sciences. From this perspective, all- girl school students look like the winners. So the debate goes on. keep in mind that for the young ladies who chose an all-girls school, it was probably not based on admission numbers. good luck to all.

Miss Porter's is bad-talked in the conversation circles of girls that go to more well-known co-ed schools. Both of my female cousins went to boarding school in New England, Andover and Choate. They claim that MPS is the "b*tchiest" of them all.

I personally like MPS. It reminds me a lot of an all-girls Hotchkiss. And, I love the Kiss!

i love mps. I right now i love prepparent b/c of the comment. thanks. seasonofluv23.... feel free to pm me.
