Missed a final due to emergency (and failed the class)... HELP!

I missed one of my class's final exam yesterday due to a family emergency. Unfortunately, the final counts for 40% of my grade in the class and the professor refused to let me make it up at a later time. I'm almost certain that I will be receiving a D or an F in the class.

The class is a GE and isn't a major prereq or anything important like that. I can take it again next quarter (and pass it this time). If I do get a D or F in the class and I retake it next quarter and pass it with a B or an A, will I still be rescinded? My GPA is still above the 2.0 minimum for Winter/Spring quarters. I applied only to UC Davis btw... I know I haven't gotten my decision yet, but I'm just trying to be proactive here and think about all the possible situations that could happen here.

Has anyone been in this situation before? Will they accept my retake of the class in Spring for a passing grade and let me slide for the D/F this quarter? I'll still be above the 90 unit minimum requirement even with the failing grade, if that matters. Thanks! :(

You need to call admissions at Davis and sort it out. Explain to them that you had to miss a final due to extenuating circumstances and as a result received a failing grade in the class. Then you tell them what you are going to do about it. Tell them that you are going to retake the class the following quarter and that you will achieve a satisfactory mark in the class. Anything that happens after that is completely out of your hands. In all honesty, if I were you, I would try to mediate the situation by contacting the head of the department, and the dean of your school. You need to get proactive and do something about it rather than moping about on CC. I know that’s a bit harsh, but it’s the truth. You still have time to fix this. You just need to act. Good luck!

^Thanks for the honest response. I just called UC Davis, but the Admissions Director is currently out right now so I’m going to call them again in a few hours. Also, the professor has a strict, no-retake policy on his syllabus so I don’t believe he’ll let me retake the final (people had this happen to them before, but he wouldn’t relent).

I know that no one knows the answer straight off the bat here, but do you personally think that I’ll be rescinded? I mean, even if you fail a class that counts towards your transfer GPA and you pass it again later, the UCs only count the passing grade in your GPA, right? Shouldn’t they do the same thing here too (especially since this is the Winter before decisions come out and this has nothing to do with my UC GPA)? Thanks!

If it’s a family emergency, can you verify it and get an incomplete for the class?

Unfortunately, I think you will be rejected (or rescinded), you can try to appeal and tell them about your situation but failing a class before transfer is pretty much an automatic rejection/rescind.

I’ll try that and see if I can get that “I” instead of an “F”. Either way, I’ll still have to retake the class next quarter (atleast for grad school’s sake).

For now though, I’m going to assume the worst and say that I receive an “F” for the course. If I retake the class next quarter and get a “B” or an “A”, will Davis still keep my acceptance (assuming I get accepted in the first place)? My GPA will still be over a 2.0, I’ll still be over the 90 unit minimum, and this class doesn’t count for a prereq or anything. And furthermore, the UCs don’t count a failed class into your GPA if you retake it and pass it right? Won’t it be the same situation here as well, with the exception that I’ve already applied and this class won’t factor into my admissions GPA? Sorry for restating everything, it’s just that no one’s answered my question directly, so I thought I’d make myself clearer.

Thanks for all your help, guys!

If your professor won’t allow you to take the exam then speak with the dean or higher offices in your school. Explain your family situation and the impact it will have on your future. If you are compelling I’m sure they will help you. Good luck and keep us posted on the result.

So I just got off the phone with the Admissions Director at UC Davis and she told me that as long as I pass the course this Spring, they won’t rescind my acceptance (again, this is assuming that I get accepted in the first place. Decisions haven’t come out for Davis yet).

So for all you people who may be in the same situation as me in the future… if your college uses the quarter system and you don’t do so well during Winter quarter, you still have Spring quarter to make it up. There’s no penalty for failing a class as long as you retake/pass it before Spring is over.

I can finally breathe again and focus on keeping my A in Physics (I’ve got my final tomorrow). Good luck to everyone with admissions, and I hope this thread helps others out in the future! :)

Can also try what UCdoggy recommended, I would most likely do that, I talked to a dean about a teacher who wouldn’t let me in the class, and he got me in.

Haha I’m actually in the process of doing that right now. I’m gonna go head up to my dean and see if he can do anything for me. I wanted to call Davis though and see what they said first. After all, they do have the final say in what happens to me, so I wanted to work my way up from the worst case scenario and then on to the other options (like talking to my dean). Either way, I’m set.

Thanks for all your suggestions, guys! I really appreciate it.
