Missed enrollment deposits?

I have a friend who was accepted to the UW and was planning to attend there this fall. She paid her $500 housing deposit pretty early on, but forgot to make the actual enrollment deposit. And as we know, the housing deposit does not hold a spot in the freshman class. So a couple days ago, she received a letter saying that the deposit had been returned because of no response regarding enrollment. I'm not sure if this counts as a rescindment or something else, but either way...

She called in immediately and the admissions office told her to write an appeal letter, and that the appeal will be considered after the waitlist decisions, which could be as late as July. She's on top of things now, and I'm trying to help as much as I can, but I just don't know much about UW's policy. Has anyone had experience with this kind of thing? How high do you think her chances are? She's a terrific applicant, but what concerns me is the fact that they'll consider her after the waitlist. Anything she could do to improve those chances?

Any answers or comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

To be honest, it makes sense to consider her after the waitlist, since she was the one who didn’t submit the initial deposit. She had as much warning as all the other accepted freshmen that the New Student Fee MUST be deposited on time.

I don’t know what she can do to improve her chances, other than a standard appeal, updated grades (hopefully her 2nd sem grades were terrific), and an updated resume of what she did 2nd sem (awards? honors? graduated valedictorian?).

Note that since she is considered after waitlisted applicants, she will also be considered WITH the completely rejected applicants who are appealing.

Good luck. I hope she has a back up plan.
