I set multiple alarms for my final this morning on my iPhone, and they didn't go off and I missed my final! I studied really hard for it, and my grade will definitely be either a D or an F in the class now, since 30% of my grade will be a 0.

I spoke to my GSI and professor about it, and she tried to help me the best she could, but the professor said there was probably nothing they could do about. My GSI then advised me to speak to the major advisers to see if they could provide any solution to this issue.

There are two financial implications:

-going below full-time status because now I have 9 units with credit
-going below the GPA requirement for many of my private scholarships

And of course, the fact that I'll have a crappy, crappy GPA.

Do any of you have any experiences with similar situations?

This sucks bigtime, dude. I empathize.
I suppose you could try to try to retake it with the same teacher next year. You’ll still have your old homework, just try not to miss the Final the second time round.

What happens if you take the same class the second time? Does it write over the old GPA you got? Or do you just get credit for it, and not have it replace your GPA the first time taking it?

I feel for you man. I think you can petition for an incomplete and then take the final next semester for your grade…

Otherwise it really blows, Berkeley is very unforgiving when it comes to missing deadlines and tests even if it was because of circumstances out of your control. (being stuck in an elevator for seven hours) You can always petition regardless of what they tell you but the whole process is a huge hassle that takes time. Making up the exam is up to the discretion of the professor so she could just let you take a make-up exam.

“What happens if you take the same class the second time? Does it write over the old GPA you got? Or do you just get credit for it, and not have it replace your GPA the first time taking it?”

Basically, yes (the former).
The old Fail or D will still appear on the transcript, but won’t be counted towards teh GPA.

Hate to be the guy who says this: Unless you have a merciful GSI or professor, you are pretty much hosed. Enjoy your next semester! I think if you retake classes and do well, the grade gets expunged. That or they average the two. Eitherway, you have to live with it.

What I do for the phone alarm is to set multiple alarm times. Say, if I had to get up at 7, I’ll set one at 7:00, 7:10, 7:20. Even if I miss my 7:00, I might wake up at 7:10 or 7:20. Sorry to hear that you missed your final though.

Set a regular phone alarm, a real alarm clock if you have one, and use an online alarm clock (keep your computer on, with the sound set at the high setting, you can change your settings to allow it to stay on even after you close the laptop screen).

Paranoid? Yes, but this has always been a nightmare (literally) of mine.

i didn’t hear my alarm for a final last semester. I ended up waking up an hour into it, and the only reason i woke up at all was because my roommate shook me awake after she got up. We were both taking the same final, and both slept through our alarms. Had it not been for her waking me up I would’ve missed the whole thing.
