My son is an incoming resident freshman at LC. We are from CA and our flight to NY to move in last Sat was canceled due to Hurricane Irene. Since all NY airports were close until Mon, the earliest I could rebook for my son to move in is Wed.

Fordham moved the move in and orientation from Sun to Mon, but that was impossible to make for us. Seems to me like that orientation schedule was good only if you live in the area. I feel we are missing out a lot since I expect the orientation to set the tone for the next 4 yrs.

Is that orientation very important (to those that have gone through it)? Anybody else in the same boat that missed Monday's orientation. I asked Fordham if they were doing another one maybe for the weekend but that did not seem to be the case. Are we a few minority here that are from out of state and could not make the Monday move in and orientation?

Well we are from AZ. On Monday it was strictly movein day til 6 pm. We dropped in for the safety speil. And father mcshanes speech nice but not necessary. The kids got id cards and walked through dorm line to briefly meet RA and get key to room. My daughter moved in a week early so didn’t care much for this. That night she said there were a lot of introductions and team building exercises. On Tuesday they got their schedules which are apparently set in stone with very little wiggle room for changes. Many kids are still trying to get there. Don’t worry, she says a lot of stuff was kinda repeat and common sense

I am certain that a lot of kids missed orientation this year due to the hurricane. Your son will have to find the RA to get his keys, ID etc. and I’m sure the RA will fill him in on everything he missed. If your or your S has any questions, you should take the time and talk to the RA and get things answered. Nobody wants to start off feeling like they missed anything, but I’m sure your son will get up to speed in no time. The timing of the hurricane was unfortunate, but I hope he has a great experience at Fordham.

My daughter said they sat in the auditorium yesterday for 5 hours. Three in the am, and two more later. She is so tired of sitting and listening to people talk. They have to cram three days into two, so it’s a lot at once. And nothing earth shattering.

One of her suitemates just moved in yesterday. A lot of kids were delayed getting there. They will be finishing up orientation info late this afternoon, perhaps your son can make it to that.

Oh, and one thing they said was that most of the incoming class was from NY, second most from NJ, and third- California. So I am sure there are a lot of kids who are just arriving.

Thanks for the information and well wishes. Those make me feel much better.

My wife and I are flying in on Friday and will be at LC on Sat morning to haul the rest of our son’s things. I hope I can find the RA on a Saturday.

BTW, is the Fordham meal plan accepted in restaurants outside Fordham or is it good only for the school cafeteria/cafe? Can it be used to pay for non-food item such as books, etc.?

I’m new to Fordham too, so I might be wrong, but I think the meal plan can only be used for meals, and only in the cafe. It can be used at the cafe at either campus, so if your son goes to RH for the day, he can eat there, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard anyone say it could be used in the bookstore or off campus.

NewFordhamDad - 1) There is always an RA on duty and I would take the time to ask him or her any and all questions you have. 2) My S is at RH but unfortunately the food plan can only be used for meals at Fordham (not off-campus or at bookstore). Have a good trip to NY.

I wish all the incoming freshman weren’t thrown into school the way they were! It’s too bad for them and it’s too bad for all the upperclassmen who spent a lot of time training for Urban Plunge and Orientation events. Hopefully the adventures of the Class of 2015 will make for a bonding experience! I am sure it will all work out in the end.

Welcome to Fordham! I wish you all a very happy four years! :)

Throwing them in is right! DD said on Tuesday there were 12 straight hours of mandatory events. A lot of kids skipped some, but she went to everything, and was exhausted.
