I missed my interview with a Duke alumni this morning. I completely forgot - I was up and sitting around the house and realized at 10:30 that I was supposed to be there at 10. I immediately called the interviewer and profusely apologized and took all the blame. He seemed OK with it - saying that he understands and that he didn't want me to worry and the he appreciated me calling him to let him know, which made me feel not quite as bad. And asked me if I wanted to reschedule which I said yes to but would totally understand if he didn't want to. He said he would get in touch with me. I am in the process of writing an apology email to him.

But my question is how much will this hurt me in admissions?

It’s really hard to tell and based on the interviewer. They might have a negative impression but since you thoroughly apologized and offered with eagerness to reschedule, you should probably be fine. Plus, alumni interviews aren’t available for every applicant so they barely influence your admission decision unless you make a REALLY bad impression to your interviewer. Don’t stress too much about it! I’m sure the interviewer would understand. If they have given a lot of interviews, they must’ve seen worse. Best regards!

It could be bad, to be very honest. The way they look at is if said person wanted Duke that badly or is simply genuinely interested in the school he or she wouldn’t even think to miss their alumni interview (despite the interviews accounting for very little in the process). It’s over now. I would focus now on making sure it never happens again.

Ya honestly it depends on the interviewer. People screw up, but if your interviewer was a businessman or just plain doesn’t like people who miss scheduled meetings, it doesn’t look good at all. Maybe you get a kind sweet person who will forget about it, but honestly, skipping an interview (albeit by accident) doesn’t reflect well upon you and if you were a Duke student skipping job interviews you would reflect poorly upon the school.
