Horribly incompetent-we were used to only getting stafford loans in undergrad and were so engaged with helping ambitious, hard working, poor, art student w/ many trips to advise, buy and transport materials to get portfolio, and, now senior project, done, that we all lost track of FAFSA deadlines- will it matter? what can we do ? Husband has 2 jobs 6 mos./yr.=busy We're about a month late.

File asap - do you have a returning student or an entering student? Regardless, file the FAFSA as soon as you can. You can also contact the Financial Aid office to see if there’s anything else you need to do.

I work at a university and support Financial Aid. Our priority deadline was Feb. 15 but we have a lot of set-up for the new aid year and have to wait on federal updates. There was also a software upgrade we had to do.

We have not begun processing aid for the 2011-2012 aid year, but will start next week. Our policy is to start awarding aid for students who met the deadline but also try to assist those who file later. When we run out of money, we run out.

re/ late FAFSA: Thanks !!! He is a new applicant to grad school for fine arts. Does that make any difference re/ your reply?

Probably doesn’t make a difference - I just wasn’t sure if he was a student who had applied to several schools - would be a lot more work to contact them all! Good luck!

My friend also missed the deadline for her son’s school, but for some reason doesn’t seem particularly concerned. They were late last year and still received the full FA award (returning student w/0 EFC). I am surprised that they are late this year, but they believe that as long as they make the absolute April 15th deadline that they will be fine. I don’t understand this lackadaisical attitude toward financial aid & deadlines, but it seems to work for them!
