Missed tests?

If you missed a test or the final exam, how can you petition your professor to let you make up the missed test?

Ask the individual professor what the policy and procedure are regarding makeup exams.

Some sample policies/procedures on the net...

Well the first step is... go talk to the professor! Can't get anything done by just sitting on the computer.

That would really suck ass if you missed the final exam.

Have you missed an exam or are you planning to miss an exam? Most people who miss an exam, say oversleeping or wrong day, contact the professor by email and phone immediately.

Are you talking final exam or regular exam? I don't know how your school works but at most schools illness or other reasons are accepted. Family circumstance could also qualify. Are you just not prepared? What happens if you have to take a zero? What affect does that have?

Is oversleeping a legitimate excuse? What are some legitimate excuse for missing an exam? What should I say in the email?

Well if you overslept it is what it is. I'd explain that you missed because of oversleeping and find out how soon you can do the makeup. I'd also call the Prof or the department secretary and get a message on record. I think this happpens and most students do get some sort of make up. I don't know how large your class is or whether there is a departmental exam but if they are worried about security then you may have a hurdle to cross.

I checked the syllabus and it says you need a legitimate excuse to take the makeup exam. Should you make up an excuse or tell the truth?

I would tell the truth. The worst that might happen is that you will need to have someone confirm for you.....a dorm head or an advisor. I mean they may make you jump through some hoops. I'd say you will always come out better telling the truth.

legitimate excuse = family emergency or too sick to leave your room.

having a cold is not an excuse, and oversleeping, they might let you take it another time, or they could just give you a zero, because you need to wake up on time. You cannot lie to get more time to study than everyone else, that's lame, and you should be kicked out of school if you do that.

Yeah I was going to say. I don't think any professor should excuse someone who overslept for an exam. That's like someone being excused to come in to work late. Doesn't happen like that in the real world.

Actually I went to the exam at the wrong time. The syllabus says "an essay or oral make-up (instructor's choice) will be considered upon submission of an email or written petition." How should the email be written? Is a phone call necessary?

Legit excuse--serious illness, death in immediate family, car crash, broke your leg/arm/rib/etc/etc. the day before....

Didn't the professor or the syllabus say when the exam was held?

Yeah the exam times were posted online. I might have misread it.

sorry, but you may be out of luck on this one.

just read the syllabus better next time and hope it doesnt happen again. learn from your mistakes.

I disagree. Be pragmatic. Do your best and try to be convincing.

You can try, but don't be surprised if you find yourself having to take the class again. Most professors would be unwilling to give out a makeup exam without an obviously valid reason such as a death in the family, doctor's note, etc.

Should I list a reason as to why I missed the test in my email petition to him?
