I am currently attending a school for students with learning differences and but the luck of the draw I was accepted into UCI. However, when I went to check my financial aid status it says the cal grant was unconfirmed. So after investigating I learned that I needed to send a gpa verification form which I was not aware of. The counselor at my school who was helping me through the applications never mentioned anything about this? All she told me to do was sign up for the fasfa. Now I am panicking and I have an opportunity to appeal, but I need a reason that is beyond my control. Well it is my fault for not sending the gpa verification form in because it is the students responsibility, but I didn't even know anything about it. Now I am stressed out, does anyone have any suggestion for what I should put for the reason?

Often, the counselor is the one who sends the GPA verification. Are you sure she didn’t? You can log into webgrants and check it for yourself. I ask because I don’t believe the Cal Grants are confirmed for anyone until the final transcript is sent in after graduation.

(1) Ask your guidance counselor if she sent the form.

(2) If she did not, ask her to help you write the appeal.

(3) If you are unsuccessful, don’t panic. Even though you may have a problem for this coming year, you get one more chance to apply - next year. Just make sure that everything is submitted well in advance of the March 2015 deadline. I know that won’t help you right now, but it does mean that you won’t be completely shut out.

But maybe the form did get submitted and everything is okay. I hope so. Best of luck!!!

Yes, log on to webgrants and see for yourself if it was submitted by the school. A lot of schools send them automatically, but maybe yours doesn’t. If it is there, then don’t worry. The CalGrant people don’t send official lists of awards to the schools until around June or July (I think?) and when the college gets official notification, they will update your financial aid. Most colleges put it on there as ‘estimated’ though or as a ‘university grant’. Then when the actual Cal Grant comes through, the ‘university grant’ will go away and be replaced by the Cal Grant.
