Hello everyone, after reading multiple threads throughout my college selection process, I felt the need to actually post one. My issue concerns either going to UCSB without a dorm or going to UC Davis with a dorm. Before I start, I would GREATLY appreciate if you could read the entire post and give your honest feedback. I have had a terrible college selection process and it is cutting into my summer.

Okay so a little background on my situation, I applied to both UC Davis and UCSB under the computer science major. I got into UCSB Honors but I did not get into UC Davis honors. I eventually narrowed down my choices to those two schools. I visited both UC Davis and UCSB. Both seemed pretty good, but I liked UCSB a little better. However, a lot of my friends and family pressured me into choosing UC Davis (Because it was cheaper / more prestigious) and I ended up choosing Davis. However, I ended up calling the people at UCSB just recently. Long story short, I can choose to go to either school. I have housing at UC Davis, but I have no housing at UCSB.

I'm well aware that UCSB is a predominately white school and is a party school and I definitely like that. I definitely like the beach and would utilize it and I just generally like Socal in general compared to norcal.

The problem is that I got pressured into choosing Davis by friends and family (due to its more "prestigious" reputation), but I ultimately would want to go to UCSB more. The problem now is that I missed the housing deadline so my only option for housing is at Tropicana Del Norte, which I heard isn't a very good housing option (students from the local community college live there / it's expensive / not of very high quality / I won't get a good of a "college freshman" experience that everyone else will be having).

The thing at Davis is that I have guaranteed housing and it will be definitely cheaper. And it's not like Davis is a bad school in comparison, it's just that if I could go back in time a month before all these deadlines, I would definitely choose UCSB...

Would you guys recommend going for Tropicana or just sticking it to Davis?

choose ucsb. if you go to davis then every time you feel bored, sad, frustrated, etc, you will blame it on yourself for not going to ucsb. you said yourself many times in your post that you want to go to ucsb and you didn’t want to go to davis. go where you want to live for the next 4 YEARS of your life. you are being given another chance and you should take this opportunity. also, if you are scared of not having a “good college freshman experience,” i believe that you would still have a better freshman experience at ucsb in tropicana than in the dorms at davis.

did the people you were on the phone with themselves say that you cannot get housing? because i know that you can still submit a late application and you might still get housing. try asking about that. i know honors students get priority housing so you could try to talk with their housing department, they already have lots of students and convert many doubles to triples in order to make space for the class. also the more people at the dorms, the more money for them. i feel like you might be able to still get housing in the dorms at ucsb if you just try.

also. how that **** did you manage to do that? and i really hope i’m not just being ■■■■■■■ right now. it’s probably something with ccs isn’t it? those people have crazy powers.

i was in the same predicament as you when i was choosing colleges. davis or SB. family tried to pressure me to go to davis but i ended up choosing ucsb and i’m glad i did. from what you described, you will be happier at ucsb even if you are not at the dorms. and i’m a computer science major as well so i’ll be glad to meet you if you decide to go there next year.

Keep in mind that if you are going to some type of graduate school the margin of prestige between Davis and Santa Barbara is not going to be a factor.

If i was you i would go to Santa Barbara since it seems clear that’s where you really want to go. Hujiko is right, ask them about late housing applications because who knows? they might still have room. Or you can try to find someone else who is living in an apartment or something to try to room with them.

Good luck though man and maybe i’ll see you next year

I was in a similar situation. My parents don’t want me to move. They want me to go to a local college and not UCSB. I made my choice to go to UCSB but had to put up with a lot of crap and still have to at times but the thing is that now that I have spent some time visiting UCSB (I’m transferring from a CCC to UCSB in the fall) and have delt with the majority of my family’s *****ing about me going there (and moving out) I’m very glad I made this choice and wasn’t pressured into another selection by my family. You have to remember you know and feel what you want and that’s the right decision. It sounds bad but your family and friends may not have your best intentions in mind but instead their own. Look out for yourself and what you want, I know I’m so glad I did. I’m gonna get a great education at UCSB and have a great time. I’ll have no regrets and am counting down the days till this summer is over so I can move to a new chapter of my life that I know is going to be great.

As for the housing situation, call the housing office and see what can be done. Try dorms and university apartments. If you really want to go to UCSB then I bet you can figure something out.
