I’m taking college classes online and forgot that I signed up for an extra class that started late into the semester. There is still a week before the final exam. What do I do? And yes, I know that I’m an idiot for even doing this.
The old “signed up for a class, forgot to drop it, never went all semester, and now how to take the final exam” dream, huh?
I still have that one every couple of months, though of course it’s never an online class because that option was never a possibility.
OMG this same scenario is a recurring nightmare I’ve had for years.
@Rollout, yes, for me since 1984. OP, I guess your only chance is to hope for a multiple choice test and have fun with it. You should consult with an academic advisor at your school. For example, it might be advantageous to fail the class and be eligible to retake it than to get a D- and have that ballast on your GPA.
I’ve had that same recurring dream for years (regular class though not online). Had no idea it was a common thing. Wondering what it means?
@harvestMoon1,@Wisdad23, @Rollout, I started a thread once in the Parent Cafe called “Recurrent Anxiety Dreams,” or something along those lines. That dream is PERVASIVE like you wouldn’t believe. People have been having it ever since they got out of college 30 years ago.
For me, it’s almost always a math class.
I have a similar one as a nurse. I’m giving report to the night nurse coming on in the ICU. I finish, and gather my things, and she says “Oh, what about Mr. Jones in room 109?” I reply, “oh, he wasn’t my patient.” She points to the assignment board and gasps, “Yes he is! See?” I realize with horror that I haven’t been in my patient’s room for the entire 12 hours! No meds given, no treatments, no doctor’s orders noted and carried out, no vital signs taken. For all I know, his alarms were turned off and he’s dead.
Every nurse’s worse nightmare.
@Nrdsb4 honestly as a patient that is one of my fears, too. Especially after it feels like I haven’t seen anyone in hours. (Though in a hospital, time is warped so a few short hours can feel like a whole 12 hour shift!)
OP, go speak to an advisor.
Want to second going to see an advisor or dean or whoever is the appropriate administrator. I am hoping there is a way for you to withdraw from the class. Find out asap! Good luck…
Yeah I have that recurring nightmare too. Frequently in my dream I don’t even know what room the exam is in and like the logical guy I am, in my dream I’m frantically trying to find the registrat’s office to get a copy of my class schedule so I can figure out what room I’m in.
In my case I think the nightmare is self-inflicted and loosely based on actual events. I took self-paced French one semester and never studied or went to class (there were weekly group study sessions with the teacher). I just showed up for the final, which was no biggie since I was already pretty good at French and just took class for credit. I think that memory is what comes back to bedevil my dreams.
Anyway, I second the recommendation for the OP to go talk to his advisor and/or the instructor.
LOL. I also have had that dream. Horrible.
The only good part is waking up and after a few seconds realizing it was just a dream. For me the thought of being totally unprepared for something important is like torture. Such a sense of relief when you wake up and realize it’s not true.
OP you said it was an “extra” class – see if you can explain your predicament and have it dropped. Or see if you can take it Pass/Fail to take the pressure off.
When I worked at a university, faculty reported if any students were “no shows” and they were sent warning emails and usually administratively dropped. For an online course, we determined if they had logged into the class using the LMS software. There are regulations for Financial Aid for Return to Title IV so it was important to determine if the student never attended, started attending but then stopped attending at some point (last attendance date was calculated), or if the student attended the class.
OP, I agree you need to try and withdraw asap. Or the pass/fail option as a last resort. If it isn’t possible to do either, then cram like crazy, and remember that failing one class isn’t the end of,the world.
Re the dream thing, mine is always that I somehow never met the math requirement to graduate, and therefore I never actually got my degree. Thirty years on…
If you signed up for the class and have never logged on at all (or just logged on recently), there is a possibility that they will let you drop. My university works somewhat like college_query’s–auto-drops for no-shows in the in-person classes, and the need for the professor to indicate date of last attendance, whether the student showed up for the final or not, etc. I am not sure whether we have auto-drops from online courses.
I’ve been having that dream some too… never done it though. It’s a really scary dream.
So why do we have this dream?
The teacher usually emails students who miss more than one class. Did they contact you before now?
I would love to know as well.
For my other classes, you are supposed to receive an email if you dont sign in online for two weeks. My professor didnt for this class.
@Nrdsb4 Oh my gosh! I have that kind of dream so many times. I didn’t realize it was common. I have dreamed of missing so many classes and walking the hallways of the school, but too afraid to walk into the classroom, because I missed so much. Wow. I thought it was just me. I feel anxious just remembering these dreams
