Missing a Prerequisite for Psych major!

I am applying to UC’s this year and I am missing only one pre-requisite for my Psych major and it is Calculus. I have all my IGETC ready and I’m finishing up some lower division work this fall-spring but it’s so annoying because everything except calc will be done.

I’m really worried because both UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara state that Calculus and Stats are part of the pre-req for psych and I’ve taken stats but not Calculus.
Is missing one pre-req THAT bad?
Can I still get into the school since it is my only pre-req that’s missing?
And also, for curiosities sake, can’t I just take the Calculus at the school?

Calculus can be a difficult class for some people, so I’m guessing it would matter.

If it is a pre-requ, then you must complete it. You’ll get rejected if you apply without having completed one of their pre-requs. Also why you rather take calculus at Berkeley or UCSB rather than your local CC? Would it be because taking calculus (At your CC) and getting a B or lower could hinder your chances of being admitted?

I know it would be great if you can worry about calculus once you’re at Cal or SB BUT Universities have strict guidelines you need to follow. If you’re going to apply without having a major pre-requ done, then you’re practically throwing money down the drain.

We have all faced pre-requs we avoided till the end but just toughen up and take it at your CC. You’ll feel a 1000% better once you have completed it.

Best of luck.

it’s not that i’m scared of talking calculus, it’s just that taking calculus would make me stay at community college for another year

I think it depends on the school tbh. I’m transferring to UC Davis this Fall and I’m missing 1 pre-req class for Poli Sci and didn’t get rescinded. They just told me I had to finish it at Davis if I don’t take it at my CC.

@psychirina

That is understandable. Sometimes we have to bite the bullet and have to stay an extra year at CC, there is no shame in that. I’ve done that and so have many other transfers. I played it safe, I made sure my i’s were dotted and t’s were crossed.

There is a STRONG chance you’ll get rejected and you would have to re-apply the following year because you missed a pre-requ (unless you want to go to another University that does not have that requirement).

But I am a bit confused. Why would you have to wait another year? Why not just take calculus in the fall semester? You can just update your application after your grade(s) are out.

A friend of mine got into berkeley psych missing Calc, but i need to mention a couple of things: It was required but had just been instituted the year before. She got in having said she was taking it in spring, but it was so hard she dropped it. So then she asked if she could take in summer and they just said do it at Cal. I was a bit shocked but that’s how it played out.

Now that was the year before last, near the start of the req, so i don’t know how it will be in 2018. They may be lenient or maybe they won’t. If you really want Cal, you need to try and find out how they’re handling that req and depending on answer, maybe apply to sociology instead.

At the very least get pre-calc under your belt and list calc for summer. I have to say, it’s a real gamble unless you hear otherwise. And @Tik1127 is right - I’d take Calc at a CCC any day over a UC like Berkeley with all those math prodigies.

Honestly thanks everyone! I’ve done my research and for my major I only need to take Calculus for the social sciences and not actual calculus, so I’ll be working on that this semester

@psychirina I will be transferring to Cal this Fall and plan to declare Psychology. At CC, I completed the Calc for Social Sciences sequence (at Cal, this sequence articulates to Math 16A/B). After speaking to an advisor, I learned that, unfortunately, the department does not accept this series. I have to complete one more quantitative pre-req at Cal, as well as their psych research methods class (this can only be taken at Cal). If you can enroll in the regular Calculus class, I would recommend doing that one. I think it’s manageable if you’re missing a pre-req & need to take it your first semester upon transferring; you’ll just have to plan ahead and talk with an advisor. Hope this helps! (:

I agree with @shayhello17 . I’m also majoring in psychology at Cal this fall and took the calc for business/social science which at one point did satisfy that prerequisite. The following year I found out that course no longer articulated for a pre req and after speaking to a counselor, I was advised to take a traditional calculus class which I did. I have a friend who also got into Cal with the same calculus situation as me however she did not take the traditional Calc. It really is in your best interest to have as many of the prereqs done before transferring. This is because you enter Cal as undeclared and must officially declare psychology as your major your first semester. Unfortunately psych is considered a capped major so it is not necessarily a guarantee. To do this, though, you must have finished all your prereqs by/within that first semester as well has the breath/IGETC courses. As shayhello mentioned, there is a psych course that must be taken at Cal. After just going through the process of selecting courses, I can tell you that spots fill up fast and there is no guarantee you will be able to enroll in all the classes you need, which at that point they say to consider alternative majors. Basically I do not think you will be automatically rejected, however you will probably have to take calc at Cal so it might be a bit more difficult to officially declare the major once you’re there.

yeah ugh this sucks. I still have to do calc for social science because of UCSB and UCSC but i’m just gonna apply to Cal as a sociology major since I’m on set to transfer this year anyway and my fulfilled classes lined up with the Sociology req’s, I just don’t have space for anymore units. But seriously, thank you and everyone else that replied!
