My S, currently a senior, had some serious mental health issues last spring. He was taking 4 AP classes at the time, and basically bailed out of all but one (Calc BC). He did manage to take the Calc BC exam (got a 5). He was able to finish his coursework over the summer, and got credit for most of the AP classes. Of course, he wasn't able to make up the AP exams (he missed the Bio, English and US Hist).
He has already been accepted early to U of Chicago, but he is working on applications to Yale, Brown, Carn. Mellon and Hopkins. His guidance counselor has advised him NOT to explain the missing AP scores on his apps, because it might be a red flag on an otherwise impressive transcript. (His apps will show him taking 5 AP courses thru Junior year but only 2 AP exam scores). I'm afraid that the missing scores themselves will be a red flag.
I was thinking of adding a sentence such as "Due to health issues in the spring of 2009, I was unable to take the Bio, English and US Hist AP exams."
What do you all think? Obviously, UChicago either didn't notice or didn't care. Am I overthinking this? (btw - he's much, much better now and is taking a full courseload.)

Unless he’s trying to get credits for his AP test scores, I don’t think you have to send out the official AP score report. The scores are used for gaining credits for Intro. courses and not for determining acceptance/rejection.

There’s no need to explain why you didn’t take AP exams.

Or rather, why your son didn’t.
