So, I'm currently working in a lab and will be through the end of summer. They're almost certain they'll be able to get me money to attend a national research convention (in our field of study) next October, where the project I'm working on will be incorporated into their presentation/booth or whatever they choose to do The only issue is that I'd miss 2-3 days of classes. Do you think professors would be willing to work with me somewhat if I communicated with them pretty far in advance that i would be missing, and telling them what all I'd be doing? Or are they gonna say screw you and make me fall way far behind.

I figure they (at least the science professors) would be willing to help me out a bit maybe since I'd be there for research I had spent 6 months on.

Anyone else had similar experiences?

yes…if they refuse…try going over their heads

shouldnt be an issue unless there is like a final or required activity that cant be made up again…

you might luck out and have it happen during fall break too…

welcome to college, where people miss classes all the time for good reasons or not. for large lectures, you don’t need to even tell the professor. if its a small class, you can tell them you will miss it and maybe ask for the work, but it usually isn’t necessary. like Resurgam said, you really only need to tell them if you have a test or if the class has an attendance policy. if you have homework due those days, you can either get them done in advance (which is probably what you should do, since your absence is obviously not unexpected) or ask for an extension.

I’ve missed classes with mandatory attendance in order to present at scientific conferences. For my large lectures, I didn’t alert the prof. For my small classes, I first spoke with the prof to alert him/her to of the situation at the beginning of the semester. They thanked me for being proactive and asked that I remind them of my absence when it was closer to the time of the conference.

In one case, I was going to miss an exam and the prof was more than happy to reschedule. Just be sure to give them plenty of notice!

people miss class all the time. you arent goign to fail just cause of misses.

Awesome. I just wasn’t sure if I was gonna get screwed or something for missing… Unfortunately it’s not on fall break… It’s like the week before I believe… That’d be perfect though, but such is life.

you might run into problems given that something is usually due right before or right after fall break…

just make sure not to fall behind as you’ll want to be ahead…
