Missing Exam because of Car Accident Previous Day

I know this is different for every school, and professor but I wanted to get other students opinions on this. I was involved in a car accident this morning, and thankfully no one was seriously hurt. Not my fault, but I will not go into details. I was at the scene for about 2 hrs, and then my ride picked me up to go the ER. I was there for a few hours. When I got home I tried to study for my exam tomorrow, but I don't have the energy, or concentration to work on it.

I just emailed my professor to see if he would grant me a makeup for the exam, but I don't know if he will receive it before the exam or if he will allow it. His specific conditions are: 1) The reason for missing the exam needs to be beyond the students control, 2) student notifies TA, or Professor within 24 hrs of the missed exam, and 3) accident report, or hospital paperwork needs to be shown.

I can take my discharge paper work with me, and the request form the accident report. I would get my own copy of the report for 4 days.

My question is if I do not receive a reply back by the time I need to leave by should I just assume that I was not allowed the makeup? I put in my email that if I didn't receive a reply I would show up with the necessary paperwork and discuss with him at his office. I am very sore and I am suppose to see my doctor within the next 2 days. I know the exam is tomorrow so it is not like I couldn't go, but if I can get a few extra days of rest without stressing that would be nice.

I think you’ll be allowed the makeup, as you did contact him within the appropriate timeframe. I can’t imagine him not allowing it, if you submit the paperwork and talk to him in person as soon as possible. Just so long as you keep your expectations low for how long of an extension he’ll allow you, you should be fine.

You’ve done everything right so far, so make sure you keep all your documents in order (including correspondence with your prof and the conditions allowing for a makeup, in case you need to challenge his decision) and take care of yourself so you’re in tip top shape for your makeup exam.

Get well soon! :)

You should be. Just make copies of everything you hand over (hospital stuff and whatnot).

Thank you! I have not heard back from him so I am going to campus to try and talk to him before the exam. The TA told me to bring a copy of the accident report form the for the request since the police will not hand anything over yet. She said this would be sufficient for filing in her records. I made 2 copies just in case the professor would like one as well since I do know not what he wants.

It kinda sucks he hasn’t responded so I have to go to campus, but at least I will know if I am granted the make up. I put in my email I would be ready to take it by the next class during office hours since I am not sure of his schedule. I just hope he doesn’t email while I am driving there.

Thank you again!

I hope it works out. it can really depend. some will be understanding, some will say since it happened the day before u should have gotten a ride. best of luck!

I have been denied make ups for similar circumstances because, in the professors words, I should have been pretty much done studying before the night before anyway. I’m ambivalent on the issue. I think it could go either way. I’d assume you’re taking it until you hear otherwise. If the professor doesn’t see it before the exam and you don’t show, you’re screwed if he decides to say no.

I’ve heard of being allowed make-ups for the most ridiculous issues, including “Sorry, I overslept, can I take the exam tomorrow?” I know if I was a professor I would never allow that. It’s going to depend on the professor. Technically you can make the exam so I don’t see any reason why they should have to grant you a make-up, but go ahead an ask.

Often I’ve heard of people being allowed alternate exams because they have an interview, but those have always been before.
