I just received a letter today from UPenn saying I'm missing financial aid forms. It is dated March 21st, 2008. Do you think they would really bother sending this letter if I was denied?

Also, all of my other schools that I applied to required the FAFSA and CSS profile and they all have received them. Does UPenn require some other form, as well? If not, why wouldn't they have received my documents when all of the other schools did?

Penn is need blind so the financial aid office and admissions officer work independently. Therefore the financial aid office could very well send you this letter even if you were denied, they probably sent it to all financial aid applicants who were missing stuff. And Penn has their own financial aid application (you probably got it in the mail), which is required.

i sort of contest the idea that need-blind=fin aid office does everyones fin aid. need-blind means the fin aid office doesnt give information to the admissions office, it doesnt mean the admissions office cant somehow put up a flag in their comp database or something letting fin aid office know that this person has been accepted& therefore they better get the offer for this kid ready...
that doesnt mean aid office doesnt prepare offers for any waitlisted or rejected students tho. i just doubt that the fa office is going to make offers for all ~20,000 applicants

You should try and look at some of the threads posted in this forum. There are 2-3 threads on this very topic.

While I agree with lehcar, other people have argued that the financial aid department and admissions are not totally independent.

As I see it, you're letter does not indicate that you were accepted. It doesn't require too much effort on Penn's part to send out an e-mail.

Take a look at some of the other posts and you'll be able to read both sides of the story.

And I'm not trying to ridicule you or anything but sometimes it's helpful to do a quick search on a topic before posting about it. If you questions is not answered by any existing posts then by all means create a new thread. But it's faster for you if you can find thread already discussing the topic.

I got it too, it's a letter with a list of missing FA docs and an envelope with "TOP PRIORITY" written on it. Plus, since our decisions come out on Monday, if they sent that to everyone they would be making rejects sending in documents for no reason which would reach the office after the decisions come out...

Argh, if I don't get in I'm going to be crushed after this.

It definitely a good sign for this type of paper mails or emails. I believe that the Fin aid office will not process for rejected applicants. By my experience, my daughter applied last year. There are a few colleges contact her for more information from Financial Aid Office when it is very close to the decision date. In the end, she got into these schools. Some schools do send emails to remind for financial aid information at the end of January and mid Feb. You will tell the different whether they just send to all applicants that applied for financial or they are actually in the middle of process your financial aid package for the decision letter.

I'm just saying don't get your hopes up. I really believe there is no correlation between you receiving that mail and your acceptance/rejection. Like I said before, you should browse this forum as there are other threads based on this topic.
