I’m currently in my junior year and i’m taking AP chemistry in first period, So the thing is that my supervisor in my tutoring center asked me if i could give a 5 min speech during their conference meeting! She also included that with this opportunity i could possibly get an award / certificate. In general i don’t like missing school and Chem is my favorite course and we learn a lot in a day and it would be hard for me to catch up with it! we might also have a test on the same day as the conference day! i don’t wanna disappoint her and i also don’t wanna miss my class what if we are going to have a test in march, Who knows? So what do you guys suggest?
Are you talking 5 minutes every day or 5 minutes once? If every day, I wouldn’t do it because it is disruptive to the chemistry class and you may be a step behind every day. If it is one time, just talk to your chemistry teacher and ask permission.
In college, you’ll be missing your favorite classes just to study for another exam. It’s normal.
Oh sorry I forgot to clarify that she said it will be a 5 minutes once speech but would probably take me about an hour to get to school that day.
You might want to mention this to your Chemistry teacher and see how they’d feel about you missing one class for this reason. With plenty of advance notice, and given the nature of the absence, I expect they’ll be supportive.
Does it take you that long to get to school everyday?
Tell the chemistry teacher that you have been asked to give a 5 min speech at the conference by Teacher X on Date Y…would that work?
We’re talking about missing one class for one day, right?
People are out every day, for illness and other legit reasons.
Speak to your Chem teacher, but don’t miss this opportunity.
This isn’t a tutoring center connected to your school, right? It’s an independent business, like a Kumon center, that’s some distance away? Where you work part time helping other kids? And they are asking you to miss school in order to give a five-minute presentation at their internal staff meeting?
I agree that if you want to do it, it’s hardly the end of the world, and your Chemistry teacher will probably work with you to make certain you don’t have a problem because you missed one class. But I don’t know why everyone is encouraging you to do it. It seems borderline inappropriate to me.
I’m not a tutor myself but I was tutored by 3 tutors so far and I really appreciate how they take hours out of their time despite of living far from the center!!
I’m with @JHS . I don’t understand why people are encouraging you to do this. Giving a five minute speech at a conference at a company that tutored you is not worth missing class. I would just say that you are unable to make it.

What kind of award/certificate do people give you for 5 min of your time? What good does this award/certificate do for you?
I recommend that you should NOT miss any class. It can be habit-forming.
I would talk to your chemistry teacher AND ask if you could take the test the day BEFORE you’re supposed to give the speech–staying after school if necessary. If (s)he won’t agree, don’t do it.
A five minute speech is something that can be recorded, and then prijected for the meeting attendees. That way you won’t miss class at all. Yes, there’s no time for any Q.A. afterward, but if they were serious about a student participating in that kind of thing, they would schedule your part of the event for a time that didn’t conflict with school.
Hey guys, thanks for your suggestions
I found out that the conference is going to start a bit earlier than I expected so I would get back to school on time:)
