Missing One Major Prep Credit

Hello everyone.

I’m going to try for a CS transfer from my current school (UCR) to another UC (UCSB and UCLA), but I’m worried that the physics major prep for UCs will hold me back. By the end of the year, I will be missing a single quarter of physics that’s on all of the computer science major prep courses. The UC transfer website doesn’t say which of these courses are required or recommended so I’m not sure whether this will prevent me from applying to transfer. I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience or knows which requirements are required to apply. Thank you.

For UCSB Physics requirement:

  • A year and a half of calculus-based physics*
*It is recommended that you complete the physics series at one college to ensure that all topics are covered.
Looking at assist.org you need 3 Physics courses covering the following:
Mechanics of Solids and Fluids Electricity and Magnetism
    Heat, Light and Modern Physics
    Plus a Lab

For UCLA, Physics 1A 2A,3A and 4A Lab or 4B Lab are required for transfer.
Checking assist.org these are comparable to the following:
Mechanics
Electricity and Magnetism
Fluids, Waves, Thermodynamics, Optics with Lab
UCLA Physics & Astronomy

On assist.org, the UCLA CS pages say that “Preparatory courses must be completed by the end of spring prior to fall enrollment.”. Example: Welcome to ASSIST

UCSB CS pages do not have a blanket statement, but the physics courses are listed as “Required for admission”. Example: Welcome to ASSIST

Applicants should complete all the required preparatory courses. Missing even one major prep course will likely result in a denial if the applicant pool is competitive.

You may want to contact the CS dept at both schools to get more details on missing the physics class and how it will affect you
