Missing Prereq UCLA vs Cal

So I was 4/5 at LA and I am 6/7 at Cal. (Psych)
Denied by LA and just got done talking to them, they said "THE" reason I didn't get in was the missing prereq.

I just checked Assist.org and Cal says that you can use the summer before hand to complete the major prereqs; there is also a message on myberkeleyapplication update that says the same thing. LA's doesn't say this, in fact the LA rep told me that they don't take the summer into account for the app.

I've also heard that Cal accepts you into the 'school' not the major, though, they DO look over your app as related to your potential in the major....

Man, am I dunzo for Cal or what folks??? I am planning on taking physiology this summer (my last prereq!) but I don't think Cal knows this!

If you get denied at Cal, you could probably use that information to appeal, as long as you can send them something showing you’re enrolled in the course you need for summer.

What’s your major?

Psychology

Wow… That really stinks man. Sorry about that.

I’m worried because I wasn’t able to take Linear Algebra this semester so I have to take it this summer at Cal. I updated this on my UC App Update but I’m not sure if UCLA got the update. So I have to notify them. I was going to wait for their Academic Update system to go online but I’m just going to email them instead. But my major is not impacted (Math/Econ) and I have a much higher than av. GPA for the major… So hopefully it will be OK!

Yea, on myberkeleyapp I updated that MCB 61 (a psych bio class) wasn’t offered at my cc and I’d like to take it at Cal, plus I’m taking bio right now and it is itself a prereq for any of the other classes that you could use for the last prereq at Cal. If I get denied I guess I’ll try the summer/physio route and see if I can sway them.

I bet you’re good if you’re update was on your UC app Mikei.

As a fellow psych major I gotta say that having your pre-reqs in progress or completed is really critical to your application. Psych is heavily impacted unfortunately and not having fulfilled those requirements will dampen your competitiveness. Did your CC not offer these classes?

But I definitely do not want you to lose hope - if your GPA is high, having one missing pre-req may not be so detrimental especially if they were not being offered at your school. How are your ECs?

Did you report that you were going to take physio during the summer for Berkeley?

drwatson,

I have some very good EC’s including military vet/Iraqi deployment/living abroad (Germany) for a couple years. Cal Starting Point, strong essays (via admissions advisor) and a pretty good GPA, now I just sound like I’m trying to convince myself, haha.

In the comments section in myberkeleyapp I told them about the MCB61 class not being offered, plus bio is a prereq for the rest of the bio type prereq classes so I actually couldn’t take it had I wanted to. I just don’t think they know about my physio/summer info. I updated that (added it in the comment section) on 4/21 but there is a great chance that they won’t see it… hopefully they do!

So, you’re a veteran? :)

yeppers :)

Wow! Thank you for your service!!!

… You really seem like a very competitive applicant…

What did UCLA say when you told them you were going to take the missing prereq during the summer?

If I were you I’d appeal!

Thanks buddy, that’s not a problem, I loved my time in the military.

The UCLA rep said that they don’t look at the summer for prereqs for the application. To be honest, Cal is really where I want to be, I was just applying to LA for another option if Cal said no, I’ll appeal Cal if they reject and just head to Davis if it doesn’t work out. Still, it just feels kinda silly for them to reject me if they liked my application overall but don’t accept me simply because I’m completing the last prereq in the summer before I transfer over (which they say they allow…)

Good luck with that math degree by the way, I think you’re crazy, haha!

Shameless bump for anyone in the know with concrete info on the impacted major/missing one prereq, prereq/summer course questions.

Danke schoen!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but…

This is taken directly from the MyBerkeleyApplication Transfer FAQ page.

“Q: Is it true that I’m not eligible to transfer to Berkeley because I will need the summer to finish my required coursework?
Q: Is it true that I’m not eligible to transfer to Berkeley because I have not completed the necessary breadth/IGETC courses, even though I have taken difficult courses?
A: Yes. Admission decisions are based on your current grades and courses and all requirements must be met by the end of the spring term. If you feel you have an unusually compelling case to make, write it in the “Comments” box of the appropriate form on your Required Forms list at myBerkeleyApplication.”

I know they make exceptions for classes not offered at CCs, but otherwise they are super strict about this. This is my second time applying to Berkeley, and I was rejected last year because I couldn’t finish a pre-req in the Spring. I did tell them I was planning on taking it in the Summer, but with plenty of other qualified applicants who had finished all their pre-reqs, I can see why they rejected me.

ucb, I think that quote is generally talking about the IGETC, not major prereqs.

This quote is also from my berkeleyapplication under the major prereq section: “You may use the summer term 2010 to complete prerequisite course work for the major.”

It’s great that they make this so difficult to figure out. So annoying!

Admissions will not look anything updated on your myBerkeleyapp past the second week (typically very early) of February. If they do for whatever reason need more information, they will email you (if another UC hasn’t emailed you already for the information they need/need clarified). It is correct that you can take pre-reqs in the summer and they expect you to if you told them when you updated your information in January. IGETC needs to be certified by Spring, no exceptions.

Being a Psychology major at Cal and now working at Admissions, I can honestly tell you that getting into Cal has stepped up another level and getting into Psychology…geez. Let’s just say I’m happy I got in last year. Besides all that, having your pre-reqs is crucial. I have said this on many threads and I guess I will continue on saying it, if you do not have your pre-reqs completed even if they were not offered at your CCC and are applying for an impacted major chances are slim. I have seen exceptions being made but it is rare, so I’m not telling you to lose all hope!

If denied you can use this as your argument for grounds of appeals, but I guess I’m not too experienced with that aspects of Admissions to tell you more.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info Sak, I guess I’m a little worried now since I simply told Cal that MCB61 wasn’t available at the school I was at and that I would like to take it at Cal, I didn’t mention the summer at all even though I actually AM planning on taking physiology if they’d prefer it.

You’ve got a good suggestion with the appeal though, thanks.

i’m a psych major that got rejected by UCLA as well… i’m doing two of my pre-req classes (stats & bio) right now and i guess this is the reason why i got rejected. I did lots of ECs and have a 3.6 (TAP certified). should i bother to appeal? i’m so dejected. :(

Yo NCB I am in the same boat. I was stationed in germany and did a tour in iraq. I was 1st armored division did my tour in 2003-04 what about you?

Anyway we have the same stats and I also applied to Berkeley. I am also missing linear algebra. I am freaking out now. I am missing the math class and second physics class but I am IGETC certified and everything else complete. Should I be freaking out here about not having these two classes? I mean I have been at community college for 3 years full time every semester so honestly no way I could have fit in those two classes if I was also to be IGETC certified. If there was ever a time to pull the vet card it is now and I sure hope it helps. If I dont get into Berkeley its either Davis (damn it) or UCSC (i can deal)

7 days and 3 hours…
