I've heard about how HS students do internships or amazing international travel expeditions that better the world, etc lol. Next summer I'm hoping to participate in the mission trip that my local church's youth group participates in. It's only a week long, but I was wondering if this--in addition to a regular PT job that I will have had for almost 1 year--will measure up to those 'amazing' opportunities?

Colleges are quite aware how easy it is for many parents to write a check so Johnny or Suzie can go to an underdeveloped country and feed the poor. What matters more is if that experience leads you to be able to write a stronger application for your life back at home.

It’s actually not out of the country. The majority of the church’s past mission trips for us teenagers includes traveling around the country to help build houses/clean up after Katrina, develop a homeless shelter in Massachusetts, etc. And the kids who can’t pay for the trip are usually sponsored by the church leaders themselves.

I’m sure that it will help me, as when I attended one of the church retreats in the fall of one of my middle school years, I came back closer to God and my parents…I completely changed my views of the world after that, and learned not to be angry, or whatever, at the world. Unfortunately, both of my parents had experiences laying in a hospital bed, dying (in my dad’s case, he was told to go home for almost two months with two aneurysms ready to burst), and that affected me a lot. And not in a good way. I want to get back to the girl I was after my retreat and I know I can with the mission trip.

Lol Sorry for ranting again!! I just wanted to prove a point. Thanks for answering. :)
