I’m a current high school senior from CT and I was recently admitted to both ole miss and mississippi state. I’ve always loved the south and really want to go out of state. Financially Mississippi State is around 20,000 cheaper without any scholarships or financial aid. I’ve heard state is a lot more chill and less of a huge greek scene/party culture. I do want to join a sorority but obviously will put my academics first and i feel like i could do well at both schools… but i still dont know too much about them. I do know ole miss has more out of state students which could be better for me. I’m majoring in psychology at state and accountancy at ole miss but they arent for sure and i might change once i get to campus. I am also planning on being pre-med. If anyone has had experiences with one or both of these schools it would be lots of help to hear your insight! I have also been accepted and am considering u alabama, west virginia, u arizona, and st. johns in nyc. I know more info on those schools but insight on them would be great too. Thanks!
If you are planning on going to medical school, the better financial decision likely would be to save money for professional school and attend the cheaper university. I am married to a practicing pediatrician. No one cares where she went to college. They care about whether she is a good doctor. So, my advice is to spare yourself the financial burden of extra cost at the undergraduate level. Ole Miss and State are both good schools. If you succeed at either, you can get into most medical schools in the country. The issue isn’t the name on the diploma, it is the MCAT score and your GPA. All of the universities you have named will offer you excellent opportunities, it is incumbent on you to take them and make the most of them.
Have you applied to the SMB Honors College at Ole Miss? It’s a very highly ranked honors college and could make a big difference in your experience. It may also come with scholarship money that could bridge the difference in total price between State and Ole Miss.
If you have not visited these universities, you should before making a final decision.
Mississippi State has a significantly higher percentage of in-state students than does Ole Miss or Alabama.
If you cannot visit, and the University of Mississippi & the University of Alabama are affordable, then I would out Mississippi State in third place.
P.S. Especially because your earlier threads indicate a strong preference for preppy, conservative & strong Greek life presence.
One more thing about pre-med. Science and math classes are going to be weed-out classes and you indicated in your past posts about a not so high GPA.
Take your general education classes first to acclimate yourself to college work and earn as high a GPA as possible the first year.
What merit award did you get from Alabama?
What are your stats?
Don’t major in accounting if you’re premed. What are your best subjects?
How certain are you about going to med school?
The med school in Miss does not accept ANY OOS students, so there would be no help getting into their med school.
