Can anyone talk about the Missouri State University MT Program. I am really curious but there isn't a whole lot of information on the internet.

bump

Hey dkastel, I’m a current student in the BFA Musical Theatre program here at MSU. I can try to answer any questions you might have about the program.

My home is far away from Missouri… I was actually auditioning for a couple conservatory programs in New York (got accepted into both) when I saw my first Broadway shows. Coincidence or not, I saw Kendra Kassebaum (Wicked), Kyle Dean Massey (Next to Normal), Andrew Call (American Idiot) and Deidre Goodwin (Chicago) all within four days, and noticed that they were all MT grads from Missouri State.

I looked into their program, they sent me some info via mail, and I ended up choosing MSU over the New York schools, mainly because of the fantastic value, but also because of the variety of course choices you can take (Partnering, Men’s Dance Technique, Theatre for Social Change, piano and theory classes, etc.) As long as your ACT or SAT scores are high enough, you will qualify for the “out-of-state fee waiver”, which drops tuition down to ~$7,000/year. That’s not including any other scholarships or aid you may qualify for.

The musical theatre program has a website you can visit here: http://musicaltheatre.missouristate.edu

One of the big advantages for me was MSU’s direct association with an Equity summer stock theatre, Tent Theatre. I was able to gain my Equity Membership Candidacy following my freshman year, which will be a huge asset when I move to New York.

My experience in this program has been incredible so far, and I cannot tell you how much I have grown. Let me know what questions you might have!

My D was accepted into 7 BFA MT programs and is still on the wait list for two others but Missouri State has won out! She is so excited about the great program they offer including two showcases, one in LA and another in NYC. She shadowed a group of MT students before making up her mind and was very impressed with the depth of the acting class, and the challenge of the dance and vocal teaching! I think MSU is a hidden jewel with a beautiful campus, great academic scholarship offers, and the town of Springfield which has a great arts/ theatre community. They also have an equity theatre called the “Tent Theatre” which comes to campus every summer and is a built in way for the students to audition and start accruing their equity card points. My husband and I were very impressed with the professors , students and the structure of the program after spending the audition day with some of them on campus. They have many alumni working on Broadway and TV/Movies as well. I think they are a little off the national radar because they don’t go to Unifieds but hold auditions on campus and Kansas City and St Louis. So happy to have my daughter in a great program like Missouri State! Go Bears!
I have had several BFA students from MSU participate in Florida State’s study abroad acting intensive in London and they have all been very talented and very dedicated. I assume they are representative of the program and they certainly made a great impression.
@All4FSU great to hear more positives about Missouri’s students ! Can’t wait to share your post with my D!
