Missouri State University vs. University of Missouri - Columbia

Hi guys!

First of all, I'm from SW Missouri and my interests are journalism, economics, finance, global studies, and Middle Eastern studies/Arabic.

Here's what I like about MSU: it's $6,000 cheaper a year than Mizzou, it's smaller, the campus was very compact and easy to navigate. It also offers a minor in Middle Eastern studies and a very well-rounded major in global studies. I can take four semesters of Arabic. I got a $2,500 a year scholarship based on my ACT score, and I might even be able to get a few more.

Here's what I don't like: the journalism program is inferior to Mizzou's. It also isn't as well-known for grad school, internships, or job placements.

Here's what I like about Mizzou: the journalism program is amazing. I will be doing international journalism. I will probably be able to find a job pretty quickly after graduation.

Now for the cons: Arabic is rarely offered. My goal is to be proficient in Arabic when I graduate. If I went to Mizzou, that probably wouldn't happen. In addition, there aren't very many Middle Eastern studies classes. It is also more expensive and as of right now, I haven't gotten a scholarship.

What should I do?

What it really comes down to is- Do you like Springfield or Columbia better? and does it matter to you how excellent the U’s journalism program is? U of Missouri is better know than Missouri State…so if you plan leaving Missouri i would go with the u. Even Brad Pitt went there!

I like Springfield. It’s an awful drive up to Columbia. I think I’ve decided on Missouri State because I can double major in Journalism and Global Studies with a minor in Finance.

Well it looks like you have made up your mind. Mizzou does have a wonderful journalism program but you have found a cheaper option that provides you with your middle east minor in a location you prefer. It seems has is reputation that is making this a tough decision for you. You can always wait to see how much money Mizzou offers and decide from that point. I am unfamiliar with global studies or Arabic but I am sure you will have the opportunity to study abroad in an Arabic speaking country at Mizzou to immerse yourself in the culuture and language.
