so i just realized i spelled the word “critics”…as “critiques” in one of my essays to carnegie mellon…besides this slip up i’m really qualifed to get accepted…is this going to affect my chance at admission???

just shutup lol

i think "shutup" is actually spelled "shut up" but i'm not sure

in other words, ur fine

thank you, that's reassuring

lol people need to chill out about spelling mistakes. They read your essay so fast they'll probably just subvocalize over it after looking at the first letters.

Between you and me, I'm the one who has the greater "spelling" mistake and the one who's really screwed, because I misread country for county on 8 school report forms. GAH!

Let's put it this way. There's no way to tell for sure whether or not this could affect your chances for admission, but it certainly couldn't help them. In applying to colleges, as well as in carrying out other activities in the future, such as applying for jobs, you not only want, but need, to make the best impression you can. Allowing a simple thing such as a spelling mistake (probably from relying on a spell-checking program) to appear in your application shows that you're a little less than completely careful. It might not have any real effect on your chances, but if your application is in a tight spot, it could be just the little bit that results in yours being put in the deferred or rejected pile. In other words, if the reviewer has to find some basis for choosing your application over someone else's, this could be what he/she hangs his/her hat on.

So next time, proofread your work and, if it's possible, have someone else proof it as well.

Dad is absolutely right...

You're applying to college...there's no reason why you can't proofread ONE-PAGE essay and make sure you spelled all the words right. That's the easy part about writing an essay...

Can someone evaluate my situation? (Misreading country for county) Do you think they srutinize the app info of the counsellor report, or just glance over it for filing?

Flavio, I mean Flavian, what was the content, I mean context of the county/country mixup ?? :D Did you state that you were from a foreign county ? Did you name your county of origin? Is it a mixup that they will obviously notice, like naming "Humbolt" as your country of origin or will they not notice, like saying you have visited 20 countries but you really meant counties?

LoL. It is the applicant information part that you fill out in the "secondary school report", along with your name, address and state. Next to that is country, which I mistakenly wrote "Fairfax," my county. Most admissions personells should recognize Fairfax county, but that's just embarassing tho. :/

I know a guy in my HS a few years back who put "lol" somewhere in his Emory app essay. I think he got the small package. I think you'll be fine. Hell they may not notice. I was reading an article in the New York Times not long ago about how biz is putting big money into training people to write/spell without relying on spell check... I know I knead(sic) it.

No guys this is serious. There's like a 99% chance you'll get rejected now michaelangelina. I'd write them a letter saying you were sorry. Maybe that could make up for this ginormous mistake. :)

Adcoms are human and understand that students inadvertently make mistakes. Yes, proof read, get someone else to read it and then forget about it. After my daughter sent in her common app to her ED school I noticed she had "principal"and "principle" in a short paragraph answer. The one area where she did not think it necessary to have anyone read as it was such a short answer!! She was admitted and she is an honors candidate. Content and overall achievments are the most important. Relax. Don't give it another thought, but learn from it for the next time you need to fill out an application for something else.

lol @ gt06's story about someone writing "lol"

In the part of my essay in which I mentioned my PSAT score, I wrote "PSAT scare." :X
