The other day, I received the following email from Brown:

“Dear, XXX
Congratulations again on your selection to the Questbridge Program. We enjoyed very much getting to know more about the QuestBridge students through their applications, and we were very impressed with their accomplishments and talents. I am writing to you now to invite you to apply to Brown through our Regular Decision application.”

It went on to say how if I applied through the common app they would give me a fee waiver if I selected QB Finalist, talked about their financial aid a little, wished me a happy holiday yada yada. But here’s the thing: I’m not a questbridge finalist nor was I even selected to the program in any sort of capacity. I applied at the beginning of the year but didn’t get selected, and now I’m wondering if Brown has me mistaken. Has anybody else received an email like this? I contacted admissions but they haven’t replied yet.

I think you should wait for a response from Admissions. Representing yourself as a QB Finalist would be a very bad thing, even if they (mistakenly) suggested you do it.

Brown probably acquired an email list from Questbridge and either got the wrong list or imported it incorrectly.

You should still apply of course if you want to and if you think you qualify, ask for a fee waiver:

Funny. I wouldn’t worry, it isn’t as if you did anything.

I guess QB gave out a list of applicants rather than a list of finalists? Maybe it is QB you should email. What if they say oops you are a finalist!

You know what @BrownParent you may be right about the lists of applicants instead of finalists. I’ve gotten emails from other colleges (Columbia, Northwestern) that have referenced “my participation in the Questbridge program,” but nothing explicitly calling me a finalist like the Brown email. I will have to wait and see what admissions says. It’d be kind of a bummer to have the fee waiver revoked, but better than being caught in a web of lies with Brown University.

If you were low income enough to apply to QB, then just tell Brown you were just an applicant but that you want to apply to Brown and can they give you a waiver, that’s all. All QB finalists automatically have a fee waiver RD to partner schools if they aren’t matched, I guess they just mention it in case they forget.
