MIT Admission Officers' Corner

As we all know by now, this forum has been blessed by the regular participation of several representatives of MIT. As a little token of our appreciation, I thought CC should provide them a little space of their own to post important messages or simply expressing their thoughts on relevant issues.

To our posters, please do NOT use this thread to post questions or comments. This thread will be stickied for easy access, but is also meant to remain as uncluttered as possible.

We'll start by posting a recent contribution by Marilee Jones. We'll be on the lookout for similar posts. We do hope that Ben, Matt, Dan, and other MIT admission officers will find this little "corner" helpful.

I'm sitting home reading the blogs this morning, enjoying my first day off in months. This breather comes courtesy of the finale of the early phase of the admissions process, but also because I'm finally driven to my bed, the result of a bad bronchitis that got the best of me as we worked late to finish those last-minute decisions. Spent nearly four hours in an emergency room on mailing night. Hmmmm... neglecting my health to get the work done... sounds like life at MIT alright. :)

Waiting
While you wait...

For those who are curious about envelope sizes: the defer letter and the deny letter each come in a standard #10 window envelope (4.125" x 9.5"). As for the admit letter, it is unlikely to be mistaken for anything else.

Jane asked, "I always wondered....why is MIT's early acceptance rate so low compared to other selective colleges?"

The Check Is In The Mail
As you know from Matt/Ben’s Blogs, the decisions are in the mail, or as they say in the newspaper business: we have put the Early Action decisions to bed.

The Nance Effect is a great place to discuss whatever is on your mind:

Here's everything I know:

I know that you all hate us right now and I don't blame you. I would too. In fact I do hate us. I know this doesn't make it any better, but we really didn't know. I don't hide things from you; I never have and I never will. The first thing my colleague did when Mail Services called him was to say "post it in Ben's blog so they know." As soon as he told me I moved it to the front page so more people would see it. None of this makes it better - you SHOULD be angry with us. At the same time, if I could ask certain folks to stop with the cheap shots, I would really appreciate it. I want to spend a lot of time on the boards and the blogs, but a guy can only take so much hatred being thrown at him.

We are working on organizing the staff to be able to take calls tomorrow (12/15). I will keep you posted, but I'd say count on it.

Howdy everyone,

It's been a crazy, crazy month, but I'm back. Happy new year to you all! Looks like I missed 6 gazillion threads - hopefully you asked the vital questions on my blog or emailed me (or had your question answered by my fantastic friends Mollie, Mootmom, etc.).

Here we go in '06. The only thing to report is that we're reading, reading, reading.

And reading.

-B

Hi, I have been tracking my son's application. Everything seems to be in except him math/science recommendation. The teacher claims they mailed it in at the beginning of January. Should we wait, ask the teacher to resend it, or ask a different math/science teacher for a recommendation?

It can take 3 weeks for items arriving in the Admissions office to get sorted and into folders at this point. It might be worth asking the teacher or guidance counselor to fax a copy of the recommendation to MIT, since it's getting close to the start of selection and they are reading files now. Be sure they put your son's name and birthdate on the fax so it gets filed properly.

I'm in the same boat as twosonmom. My Evaluation A is not in, but my teacher sent it in by the deadline, as well as faxed a copy on Thursday, Jan. 25, and it still doesn't show up in myMIT application tracking. :(

Matt McGann said last week that any missing application pieces should be sent now, ideally by fax. Twosonmom, I would just ask the teacher to re-send it -- just assume it got lost in the mail rather than that the teacher is lying. :)

KnightMair, maybe you'd want to call MIT and see if the letter is in fact in your folder? Faxing it should have ensured that it got where it needed to go, and maybe it is in your folder but not updated on MyMIT.

should I call admissions to get a fax number, or is it on the website?
P.S. I am glad to hear we are not alone, still frustrating, but at least we know that it isn't just my son.

From a blog post by Matt McGann last week:

The best way to get us a missing piece is by fax. Our Records Office fax number is (617) 258-8304.

Thanks mootmom!! you're the greatest!!

I emailed yesterday and got a response today. They said they had just processed it today and it'll show up in MyMIT tomorrow. Yay!

Good to hear. :)

Hi ALL!

I was just wondering how we can find out if you have received material
(such as recommendation letters, AP scores, SAT scores, etc.) It their
a number to call, or website or something?

Thanks so much

Hi ALL!

I was just wondering how we can find out if MIT has received material
(such as recommendation letters, AP scores, SAT scores, etc.) It their
a number to call, or website or something? I sent my AP and ACT scores in a while ago, and I know thet got sent, but it doen not say anything on the MIT Application tracker or anything.

Thanks so much

You can check everything on your online account.

They just got my sept ACT score, so you should check your MIT account.
the Recs can take up to 10 days for them to receive and sort.
Why did you send your AP score? you don’t need to send those till you decided to go their next may.

Thanks rainynightstarz ,

I sent my AP scores because I took 9 of them, and think that they might affect the decision.

Also, once you log on the application tracker, does it just say at the top what the admission office receved, or do you have to press a button or something?
