What are my chances for getting into MIT or Caltech?
I am a Junior; I currently hold a 4.17 weighted GPA and a 4.0 unweighted. I'm on the high school varsity swim team, with a time of 1:11.91 for the 100 Breaststroke and 59.73 for the 100 Free (I haven't swum these since the end of Sophomore year, however, due to Long Course season and a fractured wrist. I also do other events- those two are my most recent times, however.). I plan on majoring in Chemical Engineering or Aerospace, Aeronautical, and Astronautical Engineering, with a minor in Astrophysics and Chemistry (Chemical Engineering with Astrophysics or vice versa).

SAT: 2040 (no studying, will retake)
740 Critical Reading
690 Math
610 Writing

35 Reading
34 Science

AP:
AP World History (5)
AP Calculus BC (4, AB subscore 5)
AP Language and Composition (Not taken)
AP Chemistry (Not taken)
AP Latin (Not taken)

Female (probably important)

You would want to use your ACT scores, not your SATs, unless they come up a lot. Although you have the rest of this year to get them up, so you probably could do that. Higher math scores particularly are important. Also, you don’t have any science/math extra curriculars that you have mentioned. Can you add something in that area this year?

Also, you need to take SAT Subject tests. Cal Tech requires one science test and the Math II test. MIT requires either Math I or Math II (but I have to believe Math II carries more weight) and a science test as well.

Have you considered Harvey Mudd? My daughter attends there and loves it. Also a reach along with Cal Tech and MIT, but possibly worth adding to your list.

I have not heard of Harvey Mudd before, actually. I will definitely look into it now!

I plan on taking the SAT several times this year, along with the Math II subject test and the Chemistry subject test.

As for extracurriculars… My life is pretty packed with swimming, but I’m in engineering club, and doing an independent study on physics so I can go straight into AP Physics C next year.

Okay, that helps that you have a science ECs. MIT and Cal Tech are still reaches, though.

Also, try not to take the SAT tons of times. Some colleges require you to send all scores, and they frown on too many attempts. Study hard and take it once more, twice at most. Your ACTs are good, you could just use those. Leave yourself with time for a second attempt at the subject tests if they don’t go as well as you would like, too.

Thanks for the advice! I have a safety net or two nearer to home, just in case.
