I've heard a bunch of different things about MIT and SAT W. I have a 1570 SAT but a 690 writing. If W isn't a big deal for MIT then i wouldn't retake but if they strongly consider it then i might retake. What do you guys know about SAT Writing and if they do consider it, should i retake?

From what the admissions people told me, they consider anything above a 650 the “competitive range.” If you are above that range, they will cursorily look over your SAT scores. Anything under that, however, they will look into deeper to see why you scored so low.

Your SAT scores are amazing. I have a 1470 out of 1600; 800 on math and 700 on writing, and my college counselors told me that it’s in the range that MIT looks for.

They have a whole page on admissions statistics here:
[MIT Admissions: Admissions Statistics](http://mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/admissions_statistics/index.shtml)

You’re in the range, don’t worry about your SAT’s anymore and get working on those essays! =D

My latest information from the admissions office (from July) suggests that they are not considering writing scores this year, but it’s possible that could have changed between July and now.

Either way, I would not retake for a higher writing score. A 690 in writing is within the middle 50% of MIT admits from last year.

I’d like to see this question definitively answered as well.

Matt says in his latest blog entry (http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/the_selection_process_application_reading_committee_and_decisions/ea_deadline_your_questions_upd.shtml):

Can’t get more clear than that.
