I know how MIT handles math and science APs, but what do they do for HASS AP classes? Can you use them to satisfy core graduation requirements? or can you only use them to place out of intraductory courses?

Neither, exactly. For every HASS AP 5, you’ll get 9 units of general elective credit. (You need 180 units of credit outside the GIRs to graduate, so this type of AP credit is sometimes useful, but not always – taking 4 classes at MIT per semester and all 17 GIRs at MIT will get you exactly 180 units outside the GIRs.)

So HASS AP scores will not earn any placement credit, except for a 5 on an English AP (either Literature or Writing), which will serve as a passing score on the Freshman Essay Evaluation and will mean you can take any HASS you want first semester.

oh ok cool, thanks.
