The application is up...my.mit.edu

Good luck, applicants =).

Aw, I so remember this same message going up on CC this time last year.

Good luck, guys. Just remember that you are awesome.

good luck prospective 13's!

good luck to all of us!

Best of luck everyone! Don't forget to make good use of the Hitchhiker's Guide to Applying!

good luck to all 2013 hopefuls!

be sure to expect nothing, but don't forget to hope for everything. ( one of a few ways to stay sane through this process XP)

and

DON'T PANIC!

good luck to all! :)

that said, don't read CC too much! I remember pulling myself away from CC last year so I wouldn't get caught up in all the paranoia and omg-I-can't-get-in attitude. now, of course, is a different story.

haha aurona! I had that "OMG I am totally not getting in" attitude all first semester... like " OMG I CAN"T get a B in college physics class.. , i can't afford todo this or do that"
then the deferral letter came... i pretty much gave up hope all of second semester... but getting in is always a good surprise. however, I knew i wouldn't have died if I don't get in either since I learned to like my second choice school.

!! rainynightstarz, that is like my year in a nutshell. except it was a college math class. I got deferred too, and I thought I was going to my... third choice. (My choices also changed every few days, but that's how the ranking was at the end.)

What are the essay questions?

Essay questions:

(100 words or fewer)
a.We know you lead a busy life, full of activities, many of which are required of you. Tell us about something you do for the pleasure of it.

b.Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why?

Long Essay
* Provide your response to either Essay A or Essay B.
* Please keep to a 500-word limit.
* Please upload your essay file or enter your answer in the space below.
* Uploaded files must be either a Word document or a Text file, and are limited to a size of 50k.

Essay A: Tell us about an experience which, at the time, really felt like "the end of the world" -- but had it not happened, you would not be who you are today. Describe the process through which you discovered value in the negative.
Essay B: Describe the world you come from, for example your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations?

Also, does anyone know what happens if the interviewer doesn't live nearby? They assigned me someone with the same area code as me, but our whole state has the same area code...He lives about 5-6 hours away...

Your interview can be waived, and it won't hurt you in admissions- send interview at mit dot edu an email, though, and see if they can't put you with anyone closer. Explain it to them the way you explained it to us.

so is there any difference between the application this year and that from last year?

Nope, at least the essays seem to be exactly the same ones. I remember agonizing over both long essays last year, trying to figure out which one I liked more, haha.

Best of luck to all those applying this year! Have faith in yourselves, you guys are awesome, and I'm sure admissions will see that! :)

When it says 'describe "something" you do for pleasure,' does that limit you to describing one single thing? This probably obvious, besides the fact that it's a very short paragraph.

Well, if you can describe several things in under 100 words, go for it...I can't...I think it means at least just describe one area of your life, like sports or something...don't list everything you do for pleasure :)

S2 found the whole application very user friendly. He sat down yesterday and seemed to have fun applying. I think it was much easier for him than the common application (which seems much more confusing than last year). I applaud M.I.T. for creating a great and easy (but very deep and thought provoking) way to apply. Well done!

Wow! Same essay questions as last year. Kudos to the ad-coms for not getting tired of reading the essays!
