MIT Backups...

safety school is one where your stats are considerably higher than the 75th percentile in the “25%-75% range” for everything. RPI is probably a good safety if you have good scores.

“On Par with MIT: Cal Tech,Harvey Mudd, Olin, Columbia”

I wouldn’t go so far to say Columbia is on par with MIT/Caltech.

for engineering no way schools like columbia or duke.

Here is what i would say.

University of Illinois
Caltech
Georgia Tech
University of california, Berkeley
University of Michigian Ann Arbour.
Stanford
Cornell

Those are the elite engineering schoools. From what i hear, the course material at these schools is equvilient to that of MIT.

I would add UT-Austin to the list. It is an elite engineering school by any measure. In fact, it’s 4th after only MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley in terms of the number of faculty elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering. If you want a star faculty, you really should look at schools with high NAE membership #s.

Membership #'s per the above list

MIT 109
Stanford 85
Berkeley 75
Texas 49
Caltech 30
Illinois 29
Georgia Tech 26
Cornell 24
Michigan 22
