MIT Chances???

Another "what are my chances"...

I applied to MIT early, and I should be getting my result around Dec. 15th...

My proposed major is applied mathematics.

My rank is 3/360, unweighted GPA 4.0. I am currently taking Multivariable Calculus Honors as an independent study. I'm also taking AP Calc BC, Physics C, Comp. Sci. A, and English Lit. I took the US History exam last year, the chem exam two years ago. So far I've taken 5 AP Exams (chem, physics B, stat, calc ab (all 5s) and us history (4)). I have NOT taken biology in high school because I took it in 8th grade.

Standardized tests: Took the SATs twice and got combined score of 2340, highest at one sitting 2280. I took SAT IIs Math II, Chem, Physics, (800s) and US History (750).

Recommendations: I got recommendations from historically very good recommenders - my calc teacher and my English teacher from junior year.

ECs: Newspaper Club editor, some minor leadership positions in a few other clubs. I ran cross-country all four years (JV). I won some science league awards, FBLA state-level award and regional awards. I play the piano and have won PTSA awards and completed the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) evaluations.

I have worked and done community service, but not extensively. (If more information about this is needed, just ask!)

I do have a blog, where I solve some interesting high school contest-level mathematics problems and also chronicle interesting thoughts I have.

My short answers were reviewed by my current AP Lit teacher, who is historically known to be good at reviewing college essays (i.e. my friend who went to Columbia had my teacher read her essay over).

WHEW! I feel like I just wrote an application right there. Oh, and I also went to an interview, which lasted the maximum time of the ballpark my interviewer gave me prior to the interview. I went to Governor's School for Science this summer.

What are my chances of getting in?

Also, what other schools would you think I should apply to? (I already have my list and have applied to some but I want to see what kinds of schools I should be able to get in.)

Honestly I’d say you have a very good chance, and I am very impressed that you are able to balance all the work you seem to have from your difficult courses (Multivar. calc, etc.)

If I were you I wouldn’t get my heart set on any one school I would apply to:

 1. MIT (obvi)
 2. Cal Tech
 3. U Chicago
 4. Princeton
 5. Harvard
 6. Cornell
 7. Stanford

These are the top 7 schools for math I can think off the top of my head

I agree with broncosfan. You should have more than one school, but you seem to be a pretty good match with MIT.

Thanks, Broncosfan and Warricksdunk. I will find out Dec. 16th at 9PM! Aah…

That school list is just perfect, because I’m applying to all of those schools except U Chicago (location). As of today, many of my classmates have gotten into their ED Ivy schools.

BTW I was deferred. :/
