he is on the admissions committee, not one of the senior members (i think), but just a very dedicated one.

If you're waitlisted, you have almost no chance. Last year, I think 1 out of 400 or so waitlisted got accepeted.

QuizQuick, Ben Jones is one of the Admissions officers at MIT (and posts here on CC under the name "benjones"). His blog is an excellent source of information, and his post last night should be required reading by everyone.

If you want to view your admissions decision, you will need to visit a separate server: decisions.mit.edu.

MIT does prepare a waitlist, but in the past few years there have not been any students admitted from that waitlist because of high yields among those offered admission during EA and RD. But that doesn't automatically mean anything for this or future years.

In the past few years, MIT has not taken more than 1 person from the waitlist because so many admitted people decide to matriculate to MIT. If you are that lucky person to get on from the waitlist, you can always tell the other university that you have been admitted into a school that you were previously on the waitlist for.

A man goes up to his gardener and says
'Go water the garden.'
'But sir,' says the gardener, 'its raining.'
'So take an umbrella.'

If you are offered a place on the waitlist and want to stay there, you may do so, but you should continue to interact with other schools and choose a definite to attend. If you are admitted from the waitlist, usually in mid- to late-May sometime, and choose to attend MIT instead, you inform the other school of your decisions and will usually forfeit any deposits you made there. All the schools do some shuffling like this in May/June.
