Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA, math SAT II, variety of EC’s
[] Weaknesses: SAT I, chem II, not focusing in on EC’s, essays were rushed (MIT was sort of a spur of the moment thing)
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Essays most likely, should’ve done an additional essay in a unique way or made it into a “Why MIT?” thing… Test scores were mediocre
[] What would you have done differently?: Started earlier, my school’s poor job of college prep really annoys me. Alas, ignorance is not a valid excuse.
[/ul]

General Comments & Advice:
Zoom in on a few EC’s you love, two-three is plenty. Start early; get your tests done by junior year and start your essays over the summer. Research beforehand, and write some REALLY good essays. Essays Essays Essays. Also, try out the ACT at least once. I regret not doing so.

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: About a week before the deadline.
[] U.S. State/Territory or Country: Colorado
[] School Type: Mid-sized public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket Range: Middle class
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development):[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Unique extracurriculars and leadership like building guitars and founding a FIRST robotics team.
[] Weaknesses: Weak schedule in science, lack of research. My school really, really sucks for science. Not an URM.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The weaknesses, probably. I guess I just didn’t stand out enough.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
I’m not sure what I could do differently. I would probably tell my freshman self to be less awkward and introverted and go out and do things. Maybe if I had become involved with robotics earlier, or if I had reached out to a professor to do research, I’d have had a better shot. It’s only a deferral though, so I’m not giving up hope yet!

I was sort of expecting this, since I got deferred from Caltech last week. Still hurts, though. Congratulations to all who were accepted and good luck to all the other deferees!

[] Senior Year Course Load: Calc 3/Lin Alg, AP Stats, AP Comparative Government, AP Literature and Composition (?), AP Physics C, AP Psychology,
[] Number of other EA applicants in your school: 15+. Our school is incredibly weird. We get great testing scores, but don’t really send that many people to the big schools (at least not as many as we should be) We havent had a single student make early action for the last 6 years, though I think one girl is going to be recruited for Swimming.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): None really
[] Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): National Merit Semifinalist, National AP Scholar, Some Department Awards, Some national/international MUN Awards, some school awards, honor roll etc.

[] Summer Experience: Swimming, job as a coder, etc. [/ul]

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):[ul]
[] Essays:
I’m not going to rate them, I think I did just fine on them to be honest.
[] What You Do For Pleasure: Swimming
[] Department at MIT: Sloan
[] Trait Most Proud Of: Curiosity for the weird
[] World You Come From: Challenging community
[] Significant Challenge: debugging problems over my summer job
[] Additional Essay/QB Essays: not sure what I wrote about
[] Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Econ teacher- should have been great
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Math teacher- probably lacking
[] Counselor Rec: Got a big school so this may or may not have been good, though he said he wrote a great one
[] Additional Info/Rec: Great, from my employer
[] Interview: Went for quite a while, over a hour ish and we talked about a bunch of random things, I had plenty of questions too
[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: October 30th
[] U.S. State/Territory or Country: Illinois
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Indian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket Range: >200K
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): please. I’m an indian in the top .5% income bracket from a region that reportedly has some of the lowest IVY league placement in the nation. [/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Testing Scores, Grades, essays (besides for that community one)
[] Weaknesses: Lack of STEM Awards/Research/Projects, probably teacher 2 rec, failure to include major ECs (see below).
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably lack of major awards/STEM stuff/
[] What would you have done differently?: Nothing. To be honest I didn’t really think I’d get in the first place after noticing that I needed a rec from a math teacher. Math’s never been one of my foremost subjects and I really don’t think that it reflects well on me as an applicant[/ul]

Other Factors:
I actually feel kind of dumb about this now, but I didn’t put a bunch of my EC’s on the app like my congressional internship/director of research for our school’s psych team/NHS leadership roles/Election to Student Leadership Organisations/ participation in Math Team and i noticed one rather embarrassing typo in my app. I REALLLLY should have used that additional comments section /facepalm

**General Comments & Advice: ** None, good job to everyone who got in, and better luck elsewhere to anyone who was deferred/rejected! MIT was an Indian dad pleading type of deal anyways, UChicago’s more of my fit and my top choice anyways :stuck_out_tongue:
** Other places applied ** UChicago, Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, UIUC so far (thankfully all these places are getting the fuller picture of my ECs)

Start early, and work diligently on your applications. Really try to show interest on what makes MIT great, not just because it is MIT. Sometimes, it is just the luck of the draw. There are very few things I could have done better, yet I have close to no chance of being accepted. I guess some things just happen for a reason.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA, Test Scores, I thought that my ECs were good considering where I’m from and the opportunities available to me
[] Weaknesses: I didn’t think anything was very weak. I mean, I didn’t win any huge national awards, but nothing was really bad. I didn’t score my essays because I don’t know if I could. Perhaps they were a problem, but I liked them. I also don’t know what my teacher recs were like.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred because I am not the greatest at bragging about myself, and because I suppose they might not have liked my essays. Also, from looking at past MIT results threads, it seems that the Asian/white males that get in are more impressive than me. I probably should have listed more ECs and awards in the additional info section, but I didn’t. My school has very poor placement to MIT (0 accepted out of 13 in past 5 years).
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Start research earlier, tried to be more of a leader at school, schmoozed up a teacher so that I could get a really good letter.

Other Factors: I thought being from Kentucky would help, but it didn’t.

General Comments & Advice:
Hopefully I get accepted to some other reach schools… I’ve only been accepted to some safeties so far. I have already been deferred from Caltech. I’m sort of upset about my deferral, but I accept that there is nothing that I can do to change it.
