General Comments & Advice:
Was expecting to be denied since I’m pretty weak academically. This was nice–kind of. Congrats to anyone who got in! Good luck to anyone who was rejected/deferred! :)

[] Trait Most Proud Of: I’m a little bit WACKY. (A driven and enthusiastic person who loves to solve problems with unusual solutions or under takes projects that are far from his comfort zone. My son loved physics so much he taught the class when the teacher went on paternity leave, and bought a bow tie so he could look official.)
[] Counselor Rec: (didn’t read.)
[] Additional Info/Rec:
Described his science research project and how he made an algae turf scrubber. Included two videos - one off the cuff interview and a 12 minute Shakespeare play he made for English class, both showing really good public speaking skills and an appreciation of the Bard. (Don’t know if this helped, but it is a little unusual in athletic boy nerds.) Showed the usual crazed enthusiasm for MIT, including turning down a likely letter. 9

[] Strengths: Good grades, SATs, good course load, top or near the top recruited athlete for his sport
[] Weaknesses: Really, no big science ECs or Intel awards or National Merit or Computer Science or robotics or engineering - pretty glaring. Hey, even though he loves Bio he didn’t even think about MIT until last Spring. We’re just bad science parents - an english major and an artist.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Personality, enthusiasm, coach’s recs
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Nothing, it’s shocking but happy news, but if he had done more science EC he would have upped his chances. We were prepared for deferral.

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice:
I don’t think I can disagree with what has been said before. Work hard on your essays, show real dedication and passion in them, and accept some input from those who love you without losing your own voice. Realistically don’t count on acceptance, and know there are other places that will fit your bill. Our son had his applications for other schools ready to go. We warned him again and again that this was a chance and he was competing against kids who had gotten patents and Intel awards and started their own charity computing business while he was trying to engineer a more efficient rigging system on his sailboat. As the coach said, his personality really showed in his essays, so we’re pretty sure that’s what got him the final okay from Admissions, but we’ll never know for sure. He is as high as a kite. Congrats to those who were admitted and to those who were not, Good Luck wherever your final acceptances take you.

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice:
To freshmen and sophomores: Get involved! I absolutely regret not taking up activities such as student council and immersing myself in eclectic experiences. I didn’t realize this deficiency until junior year! Look for your passion, and follow it.

General Comments & Advice:

Being an undergrad student at MIT has been my lifelong goal. It feels awesome to see that your work ultimately pays off! And let’s be honest here. My essays were EXTREMELY SIMPLE. I did not spend time on my essays to look “the best”. I spent time to look “myself”. The content was really good but NONE of them was flamboyant. Again, I have been “myself” throughout the application.

[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Programming. 7. was kind of boring, but just talked about how taking AP comp sci changed my perspective of computers.[/li][] Department at MIT: Computer science. 8. I talked about how course 6 has the most people, so it provides the best opportunity to pick the brains of other people and learn from those better than I am.
[] Trait Most Proud Of: Willingness to teach people. 8. Talked about teaching people because my knowledge means nothing if it’s just hoarded up in my head…
[] World You Come From: 5. It turned out to be kind of scattered, but I talked about being in a super safe, comfortable environment where everything is here for me. But I only have it because my parents worked hard to immigrate from Taiwan. So it’s like a juxtaposition of two cultures – the safe one, and the hard working one. Then I mentioned that I still work hard as if I have nothing, even though I have everything that I would ever want…
[] Significant Challenge: 9. I talked about dreaming to be the best, but then after achieving the number one spot on the golf team, I kept trying to play to the expectations of others. Talked about overcoming the conception that I have to fulfill others’ expectations, and had to learn to play for myself, which is what helped me achieve success in the first place.

Other Factors:
I created an app?? But I didn’t really make a big deal out of it on my application… so maybe they didn’t even notice.

General Comments & Advice:
A deferral is definitely not what I expected! So I can’t feel that bad. My scores and grades haven’t been all that great, so I just hope that when they re-read my essays, they will like them. Hopefully I’ll get a job by February… and all that good stuff. I’m extra excited for pi day now!!

I was with my best friend when I opened my letter, and right before I did she asked me “Would you have done nothing differently if you knew you would get rejected from MIT?” and I said no.
General Comments & Advice:
Give it your best shot. Last year I wasn’t even thinking about MIT because I thought my SAT II science would be too low and I thought MIT would be too nerdy for me. Then I talked with my sister and I honestly fell in love with it. I began to study REALLY REALLY hard for chemistry SAT II (my friend helped me a lot). I also slaved over my essays and wasn’t afraid to ask for help/opinions from people. Also remember college is what you make it, so even if you don’t get in, you will be amazing elsewhere! Good luck to everyone!
